Robertson's mince meat has 64g carb per 100, not much less than the 'low carb' version. It does contain glucose fructose so not good on that aspect, and palm oil which for me would also make it a don't buy.
Recipe here from last year, don't know if the carb calculations are correct.

Thanks everyone for that. I'll try a mix and match of various ideas there. I know one won't kill me Sid, but I'm looking to gorge!

Orange Truffles
(you can use other flavours instead of orange, use coffee or cognac, whiskey, any liqueur, cinnamon or even chilli)

200 g dark chocolate (at least 70%)

1 cup whipping cream

finely ground rind from 1/2 or one orange

sweetener of your choice

cocoa powder

Heat the cream and chop the chocolate, add the chocolate to the cream, do not overheat, stir until you have a very smooth mixture, there you are, you have now made ganache.

Grate the peel from an orange. Make sure you only grate the orange. If you get some of the whites you will get an unpleasant bitter taste that you do not want in your truffles. Add orange peel to the chocolate mixture and stir well. Place mixture in refrigerator for a couple hours.

Roll small balls of chocolate mixture and and then roll balls in cocoa powder. This is a really messy job (you are warned). Store covered in a cool, dry place.

Mmmm, yum yum. I think I'm going to have to make some of these!

Thanks WhitbyJet :D

I'm afraid I had just half a mince pie last Xmas, and I was really ill and slept for nearly an hour! Can't drink any booze either. Spikes me something rotten. :(

I'm going to try and find a sugar free lager but doubt it exists.

Coors light, tescos, is less than half the carbs (sugars) of normal lager but is full strength and tastes good

Hi all.
I adore MULLED WINE ... at pre-xmas time, anyone got any tips with this one?
I like a mild one, very fruity and low spiced...
Its grand to sip whilst cooking, watching the telly, wrapping pressies up, and as a treat on a cold day too!
Any safe sugar free versions around? Anyone PLEASE point me in the direction of buying in a bottle of it to try.

You don't need to worry about sugar free with wine, mulled or normal. There's only about 3 grams carbs in a big glass as nearly all sugar has been converted to alcohol. What carbs there are don't affect you anyway as the alcohol lowers your BG more than the carbs can raise it. Not just me saying this - I checked with a private endocrinologist who specialises in diabetes. So enjoy! By the way, try making your own with a good Rioja and some cinnamon sticks.

anna29 - I have posted a Christmas punch recipe, alcohol free in the Low Carb Recipes section, I posted 3 drinks subject line 'Hugs In A Mug', you can adapt them, eg put whisy or rum into the hot choclate or make a warm coconut milk, cinnamon and rum drink or the Christmas punch itself replace some of the water with wine, the Orange flavouring drops from Dr Oetker are superb, you probably wont find any in the shops because I bought them all! :)

anna29 - I will post a couple more recipes for hugs in a mug, I need to translate them tonight after the kids have gone to bed.
When I first started low carbing I was horrified, there didnt seem to be much around apart from cooked meat and boiled to death veggies. I thought seeing that I have to do this I am going to try and make it as much fun as I possibly can.

Now after almost 5 years I have collected many recipes and eating this way I no longer feel deprived or missing out on anything. I enjoy cooking, I enjoy socialising, talking to people, I enjoy the creative side of it and so I like to post a photograph along with the recipes, I think if something looks good then we enjoy it better?
Its been interesting for all of us because there are only 2 diabetics amongst our family and friends but everyone is interested in what I am cooking up next for them, I offer rice and potatoes along with my meals and people say no way, I want to eat lower carb. Same with the bread, I now bake bread both white and multiseed for 6 people, they prefer the low carb white bread made with almond flour and few finely ground flaxseeds to the flour, starchy rubbery bread we get from the supermarket.
There are so many recipe books out there, but I made my own, I print recipes, stick them into a folder, take a photo of whatever I have created in my kitchen and so it goes. I know in my book are only tried and trusted recipes that I and my family enjoy eating, whenever I bought a cookery book I found that I didnt like half of the recipes in it.

Raw tomatoes and arrogant people.
Hi all,

dont know if this will help but for the first time in years i have made my own pickled onions. Added a few scotch bonnets to 'cheer' them up a bit so that if and when[i will] feel peckish over the Christmas period i can snack on them intead of carbs etc.

Dont know if this will work but happy to try this, got about 12lb to get outside of.

Going to miss the crisps though.

Tomatoes. Mayo.
A couple of wee diabetic friendly treats that I think I'll get in instead of the Quality Street:

Extra special coffee. Go out to find the nicest, most expensive coffee (be it instant, filter, beans; whatever you buy normally) you fancy.

A great selection of mixed nuts. All the supermarkets sell them at this time of the year. Lets get a lovely selection on the coffee table and a set of nut crackers next to it. May even do some roasted chestnuts :)

My daughter makes Christmas coffee by putting nutmeg and cinnamon in with the coffee in her filter machine. Smells divine.

lovely but if you're looking for lower carb content, perhaps not too many (40% carb and quite dense.)
We have 2 large trees in our garden and there are lots growing along the roadside. In this very remote part of France ,it was too hilly and the soil was too poor to grow much grain so they were the staple carbohydrate .
Like the walnuts and hazelnuts we use few of them and most go to feed the local wildlife.

Thanks for the warning. Still, has to be better than a Toblerone :)
