Struggling to stay positive

Messages

Type of diabetes
Type 1
I read through so many posts on how people manage with type 1, getting better control and staying positive without letting it get you down and I know many struggle greatly with the endless process of testing, injecting, self management etc. I myself have found over the past week that my levels have hit the teens and it's left me tired, drained and deflated, I am blaming the cold weather as i've checked every other option such as infection, illness, stress, hormones and none are to blame. We all know deep down what we should be doing but sometimes it's easy to fall off the tightrope and it's getting the strength, inspiration to get back on it.

So I decided to write a thread and see how others manage to stay positive, do you have a mantra, song, process, piece of inspiration you can share ?

If it makes you feel any better, my readings have been above 20 mmol the past few days and everytime I correct I have a hypo. Sometimes I wonder why I even bother trying. How can I be positive when I'm ashamed?

Well done diabetes, you win!

Hey you are amongst friends here, diabetes doesn't have to win, so please don't feel ashamed at all. Thought process is to start trying some basal testing, getting this right will be a very good starting point for you, it may be that your correction ratios are wrong as could be your carb/insulin ratios, but start with basal testing to check this first. I try to see any high readings as a temporary blip and not a gauge to measure your personal self, so please know it will come good, and here if you need support ;)

There's nothing to be ashamed of! Diabetes is a stupid game and sometimes, even when you do everything "right" unbeknownst to you diabetes decides to change the rules. Even if there are times when we aren't doing everything right, that's nothing to be ashamed of either, because it is everything, it's a lot and it is hard work. Sometimes recognising that is important - you should feel proud of the things you are doing.

I dont think it's a battle, and I don't like to think there's anything to win (probably because I'm a sore loser!), they're just numbers and if you aren't getting the numbers you want, that's ok, pause & try to figure out why - learn from the numbers. I try not not put a good or bad value judgement on the numbers, because that tends to lead to me swearing at my monitor. It might take quite a few steps to figure out why you aren't getting the numbers you want, but hopefully that will put you in a really good place to make improvements.

I agree with @Juicyj first step is to think about your basal rates, I would also question your correction dose if you are dropping from 20 to hypo with one correction - how many units are you using to do that? One thing I have found with corrections is that when im up in double figures it takes ages for a correction to start to work (90 minutes +) but once it does start it will bring me down with my normal correction dose - I just have to sit on my hands to resist the temptation to give another, unnecessary, unit while I'm waiting for it to work because that will end up making my hypo.

@MissGiggles_95 sorry you're feeling the way you feel. The greatest shame is that you feel ashamed. I suspect that your tag name is a big give away maybe that person should stand up and kick 7 bells out of the diabetes.
