Struggling with dawn phenomena...

Hi juicyj. Yes, my mistake sorry. I just called her, and I was mixing it up with something else. Pl accept my apologies. Nonetheless, she felt that said phenomenom can on occasions be over used as an explanation for each and every early morning elevated BS level, when in fact there may be many underlying causes and reasons. I guess I was biased myself as I and all my type 1 diabetic pals (about 8 of us in total) have never experienced said so called dawn phenomenom. So it can't be all pervasive.

Still, if you experience 'it' then I sincerely wish you all the best.

In my own experience and based on dialogue with mty consultant I think dawn phomena may for many be a myth.

Depends on how early one rises from slumber..?

There are two things can happen in the morning "Dawn phenominom" & "foot on the floor syndrome."

Basically a liver dump of glycogen into the system as a "fight or flight" response..

I've monitored & verified simalar myself.
So, I set my alarm for some godforsaken hour in the morning in preparation for work.
During the night & On waking BGs can be relatively stable. With nil by mouth during the two hour of prep during my morning routine prior to setting off for work, there can be a rise in BG. (Why two hours prep for work? I hear you ask. I also walk my dog too!) :)

I also woke in the night as a kid with a hypo & caught "Santa" doing a delivery? It was a bad low. He looked distinctly like my mum.. Another myth busted. o_O;)

Hello @english66

Calling your consultant on a Sunday ? I don't have my consultants telephone number or would never consider calling them on a Sunday.

I am curious to understand your motivation for being here and to learn more about your type 1 diabetes as I think others would be too ?

Noted, and thank you for your insight. I indicated that the so called dawn phomena may be a myth for many, not a few.

Have you had your diabetic consultant verify the 'phenomena' ? They would surely be the ultimate arbiter.
A myth is something that doesn't exist at all as far as current knowledge goes, implying that everyone who believes in it is misled.
If you meant it doesn't happen for all, that may be perfectly true.

My consultant was horrified when I told her I inject quick acting for getting out of bed every day and not eat until some 3 or 4 hours later (injecting again for the food of course).

I showed her my Libre graphs for the days I injected for it; waking in the 5's or 6's, with a more or less straight line through the night, a slight bump of 1 or 2 mmol/l, and back to the 5's ot 6's.
I also showed her the graphs from before I started injecting for it. Same line through the night, sharp rise to 11 or 12 over next 3 hours without food, messed up afternoon from correcting and bolusing for food at the same time and an overall larger amount of insulin taken.

There's no arguing with that, and after that she reluctantly agreed it was a wise thing to do and mumbling to please be careful.
And yes, I regularly compare my readings to a fingerprick. Libre is off, but predictably off, above numbers are corrected for that.

Thx for your interest and concern. Much appreciated.

As others now know, my consultant is a good friend with whom I play golf with, so easy to make contact with seven days a week.

My motivation - what an odd question. Because I'm a diabetic. Same reason as you are on here I presume!? Maybe you were having a hypo when you wrote the above somewhat peculiar post. If so, I do of course fully understand. Been there, done that. Life as a diabetic!

Hi again,

Of course there are reasonable explanations why you & your buddies don't experience DP.
I know from personal experience that the liver processing alcahol from the night before can belay the action of dumping glycogen.. ;)

Yep, we are all different. In part, that's diabetes in a nutshell.

@english66 I don’t consider my question odd or peculiar and no I wasn’t hypo but thank you for your concern.

Just interested in your motivations for being here as you haven’t given much away as yet.

I am here because I am a Type 1 IDD. I give money away to charities such as Diabetes UK. That is what I give 'away'. I occasionally go fishing, as it would appear, do you :joyful:

Hi @english66

I am puzzled why you think giving money to any charity is relevant to posting on this forum, but setting that to one side, asking people their motivation for visiting and posting on this forum is often very helpful. Individual circumstances often benefit from individual answers.

Some people come to learn, others to socialise, or exchange information to assist others. Support on the forum comes in many forms, but is usually offered with the best intentions.

Then there are some who come for research (we ask them to contact the [email protected] email to submit their research proposal for approval before posting on the forum), and occasionally we (briefly) see some who come to argue, disrupt and try to force their opinions on others.

From your posts, so far, you seem to be struggling with getting the most out of your Libre, and lacking in understanding of Dawn Phenomenon and the wide variety of different experiences that other people with diabetes may encounter.
Hopefully our membership can help you with both of these, if you are open to what the forum can offer.

Hi, what’s your average hba1c? and usually with pumps you can increase basal rate at certain times? But may require waking up at a certain time to make sure the insulin doesn’t bring your levels down because you wake up an hour later.
