Sudden Onset Of Ibs

Hello all, I have been low carbing for a number of years, and suddenly I have been struck down with cramping, diarrhea, wind, upper stomach pains, nausea, and a lack of appetite. I also have a constant pain in my lower back (left hand side) which may or may not be related. I have looked on Google and every time there seems to be reoccurring thread, which is an input of high fat foods. Has anyone else had this problem? There is a possibility it is Crohn's or IBS. The problem is that I obviously eat mostly high fat foods and honestly, wheat products and ones with lots of fibre also seem to give me issues.

I will have to go back to my doctor (although I am supposed to wait about four weeks - not sure how I can cope with this for four weeks) but I will have to have tests and in the meantime, this is ruling my life.

I have no signs of blood, and the weight loss is no doubt due to the loss in appetite.

Any advice gratefully received.....

Sorry to hear this - looks like you may need to do some elimination diets to find out what is triggering the discomfort.

For me it was primarily gluten and grains, and (fortunately) nothing to do with fat intake, for which I am profoundly grateful!

get this checked out at the GP soon. Dont assume its IBS, it could be many things. How long has it been going on for?

Has a doctor suggested Crohns or IBS, or was that Dr Google?
Why wait four weeks? Is that because you can't get an appointment?
If the pain is unbearable I would not wait that long. If GP cannot see you, if you are in UK, try phoning NHS111 for advice.
Members here cannot give medical advice. Hope you get sorted soon, please do let us know how you get on.

Thanks for the replies. It's been ongoing since middle of July. I went on holiday and ate off track for a week, so naturally I assumed it was that. I took some Imodium which stopped me up for four days and then it's just been on and off since. I've had one extreme bout which I 'cured' by fasting and then by gradually introducing foods back in. However, I am still getting the problem and I think it's only not been as bad because of less food.

Google says that "chronic diarrhea" which needs treating is diagnosed when it's been going on for four weeks. My Uncle was recently diagnosed with Crohns, which is why I suspected it might be that. This might be the start of the symptoms. The last time I went to the GP with the same problem, I was told to get samples which would be sent off, but in that instance, I had brought it on myself by eating a high fibre porridge (I thought it was healthy). In comparison to that, this bout has been rather mild. But I keep experiencing a 'full' stomach feeling and a desire to go to the toilet for about half an hour after each time. I have to go about three times these days.

I guess it's time to make an appointment.......I might try 111, but the pain is bearable, it's just so constant. For no reason.

I've had ibs my entire life (as a baby it seems, judging by mom's stories), and the first thing that helped me 4 years or so ago was mebeverine, but it only works for 25% of the people who try it. If I stay away from seeds (flax, chia etc), I'm usually okay on keto. Seeds wreck my bowels, it seems. I have no way to tell whether you have ibs though... You *really* need to get this checked out. Possibly with a colonoscopy, but it's worth it if it gives answers. But do stress that you are in very serious pain and need help. Possibly referral to a specialist. Four weeks is not doable. In the meantime, have you tried psylliumhusk powder or macrogol? Those might help. You don't need a perscription for the psyllium, not sure about macrogol though. But get help!

what was the result of the sample? it could be one of the more persistent bacteria. I really urge you not to self diagnose on this one until tests have been carried out and anything else ruled out.

Yes, it is time to make an appointment. Ok, even without unbearable pain, those symptoms have been there long enough to warrant getting an early appointment with GP.. Not wanting to scaremonger, but the earliest you get checked the sooner you get a solution.
As I mentioned earlier, members are not allowed to give medical advice, so any suggestions of a diagnosis is pure speculation. You need to see a doctor for diagnosis.

Hello all, I have managed to get an appointment with the doctor. She has said she thinks I have had a bout of Gastroenteritis which has then caused lactose intolerance. She has asked me to go onto a non dairy bland diet which is white bread, white rice and potatoes. I pointed out that I am a type 2 diabetic and she said could I try for a couple of days and see if it works. Plus I am to go back immediately if there is a re-occurrence. So we will try this for two days and hopefully no more. I already have a massive thirst for some reason...... She said, "Don't eat massive amounts". I don't think she knows that the first thing that happens is a increase in appetite. However, I have had a huge desire to avoid meat products over the last few days, the thought has been making me nauseous so maybe my stomach needs a rest from the usual diet. So that's the plan. I can always use coconut milk/cream so it's not a huge issue at the moment, I just hope it settle everything.

I didn't get the sample done because I stopped eating this high fiber porridge I was eating and the symptoms stopped straight away. I am never going to eat that porridge again, and will trust to the low carb diet instead. I do have the option of submitting a new sample now if I have another occurrence.

Thanks for the update, @Mayfly . I had been wondering how you were getting on.Good that you went to the doctors, and a bland carb based diet shouldn't be too much of a problem for a few days. The feeling hungry after a bout of gastroenteritis can be a bit uncomfortable, but I always find that restarting dairy and meat too soon only starts the gut problem all over again. You will need to reintroduce those gradually, and the 'good bugs' in your gut will have been depleted too. I find after the gut problems settle that live yogurt helps restore balance.
Do go back to doc if you don't improve in a few days.
