Is it standard deviation? I heard that this is a measure of how variable your BG results are. So if your average BG is 7.6, say, that could be cos all your pre meal BGs are 4 & your post meal ones are 10.3, or it could be that your pre meal ones are all 2 & your post meal ones are 13! Obviously the first situation would be better! I read that the SD should be 1/3 of your average BG.
Of course, it's only as good as the data you put in from your tests - this may not reflect the true picture, especially if you never test after meals, or never test if you feel hypo (just treat it & test once you feel better). I tend to do lots of repeat tests if I get a high reading & do a correction bolus, to check it's coming down, so that pushes my average BG up.
