sugar free sweets

I'm very suspicious of the whole thing. Which is why my "Sugar Free Werthers" are still unopened.

I agree 100% - I'm very suspicious. HOWEVER; I do eat the Atkins daybreak bars (sainsburys) quite regularly. I like them, close to the old cadburys "nutrition" bars, but they say "only 2 net carbs per bar" !! Don't know if that's true, but I tested extensively on these in a proper controlled experiment way, and they don't seem to raise my BG AT ALL. Also tried the Atkins chocolate and hazelnut crunch bars and peanut butter fudge bars. (Can't find these at Sainsburys, so got on line) and they had a SMALL impact on BG, but not enough to stop me eating them! The fudge ones are ok but don't resemble fudge at all, the hazelnut ones are a bit like the old Picnics.
I will be trying the Werthers: I'll obviously have to eat a lot to do proper experimental testing!

Thanks guys, a lot clearer now, Ive naughtily eaten 5 of the little gems, and tested and would you believe....... Nothing, not a blip on the meter, I know im on a long lasting insulin ( levemir twice a day) but thats brought my bg readings to a steady level.. so still watching for different foods that raise me.. Parsnips and old potatoes Awful...

But so nice to have a little treat yum have put them away now not wanting to start an intimate secret affair with the loo ....

Bit suspicious also ... old adage... there is no such thing as a free lunch ( or sweetie )??

I am sorry to tell you this, Grazer and Alliebee, but you have been eating more carbs than you think in your Atkins Daybreak Bars. The 2g carbs marked on the packet is 2g NET carbs which is the American way of measuring carbs. We don't go by the net value as it is totally misleading to a diabetic. The actual amount of carbs, in our money, is 16 g. So you have been lucky with your levels. Have a look at this link:

Well I've just had one of my sugar free Aldi sweets, and it's given me abit of a psychological boost anyway.

I've had one of those days when I've got a huge craving for something sweet. I had to pop to the local shop for something and as I walked down the isle with all the choc bars, I found myself just standing there, staring at them, like I was in a trance. Only get like that every so often.

Why is it that the Sugar Free Hartley's Jellys have (almost) zero-carbs, but the sugar-free sweeties are all packed full of polyol carbs?

Couldn't they just make some diabetic (or Atkins) friendly sweets using whatever sweetners are in the Jellys?

I've always thought like that. We all use sweetners for drinks and for cooking, and we're fine. So why do they use Sorbitol in diabetic treats that send you running to the loo? Never understood it.

Yeah, I do understand that Daisy, which is what i was saying about "not quite believing the net carb " bit. The figures still don't add up though. The bars show 8.5 TOTAL carbs before deductions to get to net. Of that, 6.4 of those grams are polyols which even UK sources say you can discount half of. (Only half on average are digested - perhaps why we can get iffy tummies if we eat too much!) I tend to look at the 8.5 TOTAL carbs and consider them very low GI rather than going the net carbs route.
I think there's lots of confusion with gross and net carbs UK/USA. We don't take dietary fibre off total carbs to get net ones; but we don't add fibre ON to gross carbs to get a total either I don't think. Some of these sites seem to suggest you get to 16 carbs by adding fibre on to gross carbs, having NOT taken it off to get to Net!! Help someone! Explain!
By the way, the site from one link says they are all 22 grams, but includes the indulgence bar, which is much heavier and much more gross carbs, and more net, so that doesn't seem right.
All I know is that I've tested after eating them at least a dozen times, (which meant I had to eat a dozen bars - I'm thorough! )and NEVER had a rise at all.

I find the Wearthers sugar free in Sainsbury shops along with Sainsbury,s own brand milk and dark chocolate bars
100g for about £1.10 per bar.

Hope you guys find this useful

Been there when they were much younger than teenagers :)

We eventually put the treat box on top of the kitchen cupboards out of reach so they had to ask first

Why CAN'T they make PROPER sugar free chocolate orange creams, mint creams, fudges.......... can't they just swop sweeteners for sugar??  They do it for Werthers it seems?  Can we start a petition to Cadbury's?

Can I be first to put my name on the petition?

Oh and please can we include dairy milk and caramels and galaxy ......
