Evening, hope everyone's well with another storm firing it's way up over here..

But I wanted to ask, see if anyone knows, about sugar in tea and how it can affect BS levels. I've gone from 2 sugars in tea 3-4 years ago down to just less than 1/4 of a teaspoon, I have around 5-8 small sized cups per day, it's only tea and sparkling water that I drink, no coffee or alcohol etc. I used to have a scone with butter and jam with each cup that's gone too, it's just tea with less than 1/4 teaspoon of sugar and a digestive biscuit. I've cut down on all sugars, all pasties, dropped down to a small cup and less than 1/4 spoon of sugar in my tea. I see this as a reward.

What I'd like to know, if anyone could help please, is; will a drink prepared this way with a biscuit be a wrong assumption that it's ok to have. I have told myself if I've made the trip down from 2 to 1/4 teaspoon I could drop down to no sugar, I've tried it and all that happens is I drink less tea. Not into green, camomile teas etc just a good quality English breakfast tea with a drop of milk.

This all said, is this ok? What do you do with your drink of tea? any tips or advice please, kind wishes all, Q..

I would say if you enjoy a small amount of sugar in your tea and your BG levels aren't all over the place carry on ! You've already made sacrifices but we're still human !

It all depends on what your meter says about your blood sugar. If it was me I would drop any added sugar where I can and use nothing or sweeteners. I would also ban biscuits from the house and look for better snacks e.g. nut's. It's your choice as long as your blood sugar stays in the right range

Hi Q007, when I was diagnosed back in September 13 I too loved my sweet things.
I stopped from day one, no cakes, biscuits, sweets, chocolate, and of course sugar.
All the obvious glucose.
And with help and advice to be found in many topics on this forum have adjusted my diet to help control my diabetes.
I've found it best to avoid all sugars as a little bit here and there all add up. Tea on its own is a wonderfully refreshing drink and I too have many cups aday without milk though.

I gave up sugar in my tea years ago on medical advice. I just cold turkeyed out of it and now I can't stand the taste of sugar. Tea without sugar now tastes sweet to me.

As someone else has already said, think twice about the biscuits.

You don't need to add sugar or any other sweeteners to a cup of tea, you'll taste the goodness of the tea much better without the sweet taste.

If Q likes a small amount of sugar in his tea, why not ? Sure it would be better if he didn't but diabetes does not mean giving up everything you enjoy !

I know that tea without milk is good for mood and an anti-oxidant, well done to you but to give up the sugar and the milk would probably see me giving up tea and, as I only favour two types of drink, it would mean just water for me. Thanks for you kind post,

I've tried many times but can't finish a cup without just a drop of sugar, but I'm listening to the advice given by all and plan to have another go at dropping out sugar in tea, thx for the kind reply, Q..

No problem Q007, all my family don't take sugar in tea or coffee, we just didn't add it when they were little and they prefer to drink it without, aa I say you do enjoy the tea more once you get use to it:)

i definately prefer tea without now, i took 2 sugars forever, now if i sip someone elses by accident at work its simply awful, you would i suspect get used to it in a couple of weeks

howdy mate, is it ok?....thats up to you, for me NO.... its sugar lol

Yo' Andy Sup dawg, Hope you're well, well done on dropping the sugar in tea. My BS levels won't drop below 5.6 even when I fast, this might be the reason with a cuppa tea every 4 hours or so?

Good I think you have done well and sure a tiny bit of sugar will do you no harm. I have recently given up having half a level tea spoon of sugar in coffee can't really say I like it without but when I tried the sugar back in it I didn't like either Once I only drank coffee during the day and had just one cup of tea when I got up in the morning. No problem with tea as I have never had sugar in that so now I have about 3/4 mugs of tea a day and only one cup of sugarless coffee I only drink water other times

Does anyone know of a good sweetener? For me to try. I've tried them before but they have an after-taste, and a whole one would be 1 sugar wouldn't it? I'm used to just a quarter. Thx, Q..

i do not take sugar in drinks [nor sweetners] or add to anything really
Did try the making cakes with half sugar but didn't like thm so, basically gave up cake.

Potatoes were my hard thing as I love them. I cut down and after 18 months or so find i do not really look for them and when I have them one is more than enough which surprised me

Good luck

even if it meant giving up your tea for a couple of days, it would be interesting to see what effect it has on bgs :)

I gave up sugar years ago Q and don't like the after taste of sweeteners either. How about ditching the digestive, which is one of the higher carb and calorie biscuits. Perhaps swap to a less loaded one?

i may be obsessive (according to everyone i know lol) but thought of actually putting sugar in me makes me shudder
