Type of diabetes
Type 2
Diagnosed with diabetes type 2 last March which had been diet controlled until this month.
My Doctor has now put me on Metformin 500mg x 3 daily.
I have today checked my blood due to the fact for the past 2 days I have been feeling unwell (tired and light headed). The reading for my blood test was 4.8.
Can someone please advise me?

Do you know what level your bloods were running at before? If they have dropped significantly you might be having what they call a false hypo ( although you are only .8 away from a real one ). You may need to adjust your diet or the amount of meds you are on or you may level off as your body adjusts. Sorry can't be more help. Hopefully somebody more experienced will come along in a minute. BTW you shouldn't drive at that level ( anything under 5.0 apparently ).

How long have you been on Metformin? Normally people go on to it slowly - 1 a day for a week, then 2, then 3 - because it is known to cause side effects quite often when you first start taking it. Gastric upsets are the worst! Check the packet insert and see what it says - I think tiredness is one of them.

Do persevere with the metformin, though - for most people the side effects settle down very well.

At what time did you test to get the reading of 4.8 mmol/l ?

Also if your diet control is now not working so well have you read the advice that Sue and I offer to newly diagnosed ? Some of the information may help, although you will find it isn't exactly what the NHS/DUK dietary advice tells you to do ! We think this is better.
