Forgive me if this has been covered. New here and new to all of this. Recently tested high in fasting glucose. Still waiting for the A1c results. But got a glucose meter and my bs is all over the map, with frequent very low readings, especially after eating. My blood sugar can drop 70 points in 20 min and is often reading 20 to 40 (us) which is a medical emergency according to what I read. I've been eating frequent small meals with lots of protein and fat for 10 days now with no impovement. Tonight I had salmon and spinach with olive mix, no carbs, and 20 min after eating, Meter was reading lo. It was 100 pre meal.

I feel lost and hopeless. Does it take a while for my body to adapt to this and readjust? I am not overweight but I used to drink sugary frappuchinos every day and eat carbs like french fries or potato chips frequently. It feels like low carb is not helping. Any advice wold be welcome

Hi and welcome @Tanag

A few questions :)

Have you been diagnosed with reactive hypoglycaemia? Because there are a few other medical conditions which cause low blood glucose, and they don’t all benefit from Low Carbing.

An hba1c test won’t ever diagnose RH. Which is v frustrating! It measures a rough average of blood glucose over the last few weeks/months. So it won’t give any indication of highs/lows. You will need a glucose tolerance test to check for RH.

How do you feel when your meter reads those low numbers? I would be feeling v rough indeed. The reason I ask is because it is possible that if you feel ‘ok’ at those numbers, then the meter may be playing up. So you need to get that checked out with a comparison meter.

No matter what though, I STRONGLY urge you to make an appt with your doc, and show them your meter readings. As a matter of urgency. Hypos like that are to be taken seriously.

Hope this helps!

As @Brunneria has said you need a visit to your doctor and ask him for a referral to a specialist.
Unfortunately, we have no way to say what it is, as there is so many conditions and only tests can confirm what is happening to you.
There are many types of hypoglycaemia and hyperglycaemia and also hormonal conditions that can give you the same symptoms.
Even metabolic syndrome will give you those symptoms.
It may be diabetes, but I would be guessing.

I would advise a food diary to track your readings from your glucometer and what you eat. This will help with diagnosis and give you a clearer picture of what is happening.

If you have been diagnosed, then have a really good read of our forum, there is a lot knowledge and will probably ring bells with your experience. We are really all different, even though we have similar symptoms, and finding out what helps you is so important to giving you your health back.

Best wishes
