Hi. I joined this forum for my daughter who has type1 diabetes. I have a concern. She had her menstrual period last monday and almost gone now. But her sugars spiked to more than 200 esp in the evenings. Is this normal? She has retinopathyand had laser treatments. She also suffers from hypertension (she hasmeds for this) and protein on her urine.

Hello @Irmabangsal Welcome to the forum :) This is a topic close to my heart as I too suffer each month with what I call 'insulin resistance' it's the imbalance of hormones which can dramatically affect insulin requirements. I have tried using the coil which didn't work for me, so now I am simply mindful of the time my period is due to pay close attention to my changing insulin requirements, I find that my requirements can increase by a third 2-3 days before and a few days into my period. It's a good idea to put a reminder in the diary to be aware. I am sorry I can't offer any advice on the hypertension, but in regards to the retinopathy this can clear if blood glucose levels are stablised. How are her levels in general ?

Yes, it can. It can vary for each woman. once she notices a pattern she can be prepared and maybe consider adjusting her insulin for those days if she goes very high. Keeping a diary helps work out how those hormones can affect things.
