Does anyone have any good tips for avoiding swine flu this Winter? They are saying that a third of people will catch it this Winter :? :|

I will be having the Flu jab and the Swine Flu jab. I don't take much notice of what the Nurses are saying, from experience on this forum...it is usually pretty dire and not to be trusted ? Keeping myself fit and healthy and like Sue avoiding anybody who I know has got it.

I prefer to have prevention first and leave nothing to chance. Keeping some convenience foods in the freezer, plenty of drinks (water etc) in store and making sure all medications are in stock.

Keep contact numbers to hand for GP, Friends and relatives as I live alone and if help is needed they are at the end of a phone.

Other than that nothing much really. :D

I know i should have the swine flu jab but the fact that a lot of nurses etc are not having it does put me off somewhat, i'll just stick to cold baths and hot toddys to kill off any virus

SWINE FLU PEAK PERIODS???

Like everyone else I too am a concerned citizen in contracting the H1N1 virus. I use my hand sanitizor regularly and/or hand washing with soap. After careful consideration and a Type 1 Insulin dependent Diabetic I have decided to not have the H1N1 vaccine shot and just go for the flu shot.

Why? Not enough testing has been done determine if this vaccine is safe on humans. I don't know about the U.K however in Canada by law anyone who works in hospitals must have this H1N1 vaccine. That includes Nurses and Doctors. So in theory you will be safer in Hospitals then compared to public healthcare clinics.

However this is my next concern. My Doctor has his own clinic and it's not in a hospital and he informed me he will not be taking the vaccine shot. This deeply concerns me. He sees on average more sick people everyday compared to the average person. I see him every 4 months so I can have my prescriptions, and receive my A1C results.

In Canada visits to the Doctor and getting blood tests are covered by the Government everytime you show your Medicare card. This is the part that annoys me. Doctors want your card they will not do prescriptions and give blood test results over the phone. It has to be in person.

My question is when does this Flu season begin? What is the peak period? Also when will it end??
Most of my appointments are between October and Jaunuary so I do have a dilemma.
If anyone can shed some light it would be appreciated. :D

I have stocked up on essentials that mean I will be able to eat if I'm ill (and up to eating).

I have stocked up on paracetamol and other medications.

I have talked to friends about being flu-buddies, and make sure that someone knows I'm ill and okay.

Right now I am going about my buisness as normal and paying attendtion to handwashing, if I get it, I get it. I would rather get it out of the way sooner rather than later.

As for the anti-viral... most of the nurses I know are saying they probaly won't take it. I have not made up my mind, what would affect my decision is, on the day, how bad do I feel and will the tablets get to me in time to make a difference.

I'd be keener to take the antibiotics if I got a secondary infection.

I will do he usual - nothing! My opinion is its all propaganda to get rid of back stock after all the government has a contract with a pharmaceutical company to be supplied with it each year so they have to justify that don't they. I prefer to keep my bodies 'natural' defences up rather than be injected with a 'predicted' virus I may or may not get, that only lasts for the one year. My husband and I got a letter from our clinic stating come in now and get your flu injection so it was obviously a campaign started up then just ONE week later there's mention on the tv of a swine flu outbreak - I wonder why! could i be because everyone went along and had the ''prevention'' then it got started? That is my assumption anyway others may well differ with it but in the meantime I stick to my usual plan.
