Wondered if anyone has any tips for a night out? Last couple I've been on I tend to go very high and then very low as the night went on so I've avoided alcohol for a long time. I Want to be able to keep my blood sugar a bit more stable but not really sure how.

You're choice of a tipple is...?

If I were to have diet lemonade and vodka that would sort out the high bg, but I'm not sure how to stop the low from occurring.

If I have spirits like that, I eat carbs with them. Not a huge quantity but I tend to eat something like crisps, a few at a time spaced out over the time it takes me to drink the drink. I have no idea how many carbs I have, but something like 5-10g for one drink very roughly.

What have you been drinking in the past when you've gone high, by the way?

Wine or vodka, lime and soda (preferably with fresh lime but a small dash of lime is usually ok)

I deal with it on my blog, this works for me https://type1bri.com/alcohol-and-t1d

Hi,
I'm a uni student and I've discovered that when I'm drinking vodka and orange is the best way forwards, as the orange juice stops me from going low and the vodka drops me so it comes off normally okay. My diabetic team suggested that when you get home after drinking have some carb with no insulin as sometimes drinking masks the effects of a hypo, and they said they would rather I was higher in the morning than have a night hypo and wake up despite this never ever happening of me begin 8 years as a diabetic :) hope this helps

I'd recommend experimenting. Different drinks can have different impacts and vary between diabetics. Many who drink spirits go hypo but no spirit has any impact on my blood sugars as if I mix it (I do love a neat rum) I have a diet mixer. White wine and red wine does nothing to me but rose wine causes my sugars to climb, as does cider. I don't drink lager or beer but I know many have to take insulin with them. So, your body will react in its own way. So one night go out, stick to one type of drink, same mixer, don't snack as you go (hard when the munchies kick in I know!) and see what happens. Then try it with something else. Then you will learn how you need to plan :) Also, keep in mind some hypos when out could be caused my the heat and if you are a dancer. Also keep in mind what you ate beforehand. Hope it works out for you.
