So 3 weeks ago I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at 26 years old. Id only been having symptoms for around 3 weeks prior to diagnosis.

Since being diagnosed I've had quite a few people question this as they seem to think I'm maybe too old to be diagnosed with Type 1.
Is there anyone else out there that had been diagnosed now with type 1 at a similar age or older?

I'm having a tough time with how I'm being treated at work because of my new diagnosis and fed up with people telling me you can get rid of diabetes, when at the moment I don't have this option, so feeling pretty **** and after some reassurance.

I've heard members here who have said they were dx with T1 older than you. You will get lots of people commenting the same and probably lots of help in dealing with those around you. Chin up.

Hi,

There are tons of folk diagnosed T1 well after childhood & teens...
Tagging in @Juicyj @mahola .

Lol, a "cure" has been on the horizon (the next ten years.) since I was a kid..
The "people" telling you this at work, I'm guessing are not health care professionals..? ;)

Thanks for your reply!
Haha, infact most that have mentioned this are actually health care professionals. Shocking isn't it.

Not at all...! At an introductory apointment at a new GP surgery I whipped out my Novopen & Accu-Chek Mobile meter. As my prescription list was perused...& the Doc thought I was Captian Kirk!

..... I didn't have the heart to inform him that some T1s use a pump now.

I was diagnosed a few weeks before turning 26.

My diabetes is certainly type 1 as cpeptide test was nil and gad test was >2000, and those tests were only done 4 years post diagnosis when the DSN was convinced I must be type 2 due to severe hypos.

Juvenile diabetes is a misnomer. That's why it's now called type 1 diabetes. There is no such thing as too old for type 1. I think about 25% of those with type 1 are diagnosed over 40.

Hey @Scarlett91 . Welcome to the forum. 27 yrs ago I was diagnosed at age of 27. I've met people in there 50's diagnosed T1.
It's definitely not unusual.
As a fully fledged T1 diabetic YOU are now the expert, only you will ever fully understand what it means to be T1. It's bespoke knowledge to us T1's.
Unless a work mate is a T1 or a professional diabetic health worker/ consultant then the law entitles you to smile and ignore them:).
This forum offers great advice, stick with it and they'll always be someone able to help and understand.

I think i’m the oldest to reply at 39, I have to admit I did have a touch of denial when I was diagnosed as I kept thinking what if I was an abnormal case and it would go away - it didn’t and 5 years later I am well and truly grabbing my type 1 beast by the horns. I don’t let anything get in the way of life, just ran my first ever 5km on sunday and doing it again next weekend, I ski, ride a road bike, raise money for Juvenile Diabetes. Don’t let comments get you down every one seems to have an opinion about it, just ignore them as they don’t live with it, we are here to support you so please shout if you need to.

I was 36 when diagnosed. Like @Juicyj Mentioned i have spent the last 2mnths since diagnosis thinking it would go away or someone had got something wrong - esp as I’m overweight I feel like I ‘should’ be t2 if anything. But the insulin seems here to stay ;)

I'm 43 and was diagnosed about 6 weeks ago. My GP and practice nurse were convinced I was type 2 despite severe weight loss and high ketone levels. They kept me on gliclazide (sp?) for 10 days despite me saying my BG levels weren't falling and in the end I found myself on a drip in A&E. Diabetes team at the hospital were not impressed - they've been brilliant.

Around 20% of type 1's / LADA are diagnosed over the age of 40 so it isn't just a disease of young people.

Hi, I was diagnosed with type 1 at 31 years, I called it a farewell leaving present from my Ex! At that time, I was hundred's of miles from home, missing my two children, who were worried about me as I was in hospital, but I just got on with it when I returned home and back to work, I even had my 3 rd child at the age of 42 1/2, my greatest diabetes moment, it is tough a first, but honestly it does get easier and it's just a small part of who you are.
Take care and keep your chin up X
