Hi

I was diagnosed with T2 in Oct 17 with a HbA1c of 84 and put on Metformin, of which I should be taking 4 now but only taking one as I want to control this by diet and exercise [now walking 10k a day]

So I'm self testing my BG and 11 weeks ago my weekly average was 10.90, for the past few weeks between 6.6 and 7.4 [slight rise due to Christmas and Norovirus] Through testing I've realised I have the dawn phenomenon, the rise between night and morning has lessened I did have a week of around mid to high 7's for morning fast test, this week it's mid to high 8's [Christmas effect?]

I'm not new to LC having done this for 14 years, I aimed for under 30g a day but may have a bit of carb creep, however it was not low enough so I'm now around 12g a day.

So I've looked at 16/8 [once] and Atkins fat fast [twice bit of a headache], if I don't eat breakfast my BG continues to rise in the morning as in 16/8 diet. Atkins advocates 5 x 200g meals high fat, I had a headache first time with this, so made bone broth the second time, I didn't feel hungry either. This is good in so much it's allowing my liver [oh yes got a fatty liver too] to get rid of it's stored glucose, however the DP rises will impact on my HbA1c test.

Can I expect these rises to continue until I've lost more weight, and carry on with the intermittent fasting which in turn will speed up weight loss and then [hopefully] the dawn phenomenon will go away and I will then have better morning fast BG levels. In the short term not worry too much about the HbA1c test.

Those who now have 'normal' BG levels what are your typical morning/fast BG levels and then before & afte eating?

Thanks

Hi.
None diabetics get DP too. It's normal. However I often do fatty protein before bed to block my dp and agsin on rising. Late afternoon lc food process as normal. My fatty liver loved liver blocks and my hba1c too.

I found that my morning readings were the last to come down. Typically I see a rise between my waking reading and the next one - that used to be the pre-breakfast reading, but I no longer eat breakfast. I still test at the same time though, so that I can track progress.

My DP has lessened as I have increased intermittent fasting and as my overall levels have come down. Occasionally I still get a steep jump, but usually now it’s less than a 1mmol rise before starting to come down again.

My typical waking readings are between 4.6 and 5.3. I generally run in the 4s and low 5s all day (sometimes hot the high 3s before dinner on fasting days) and rise only about a maximum of 1 mmol after meals. However it took a long time to get there and I’m sure everyone has different patterns. It can be difficult not to compare yourself to others - I remember wondering how people achieved normal levels when I first started. The important thing is to find strategies that work for you, to set your own goals and take it from there.

I’ve looked back on my records of when I did a month of intermittent fasting with one meal a day which I kept low carb. I did this last October after a month of lCHF. I had initially some high blood fasting sugars but saw A big change in my blood sugars after the first two weeks. I continued from November to current to fast dinner to dinner two days a week and my fasting blood sugars are now from 4.4 to 5.1 - although on fasting days they can rise to 5.9 pre dinner and then go down to 5.2 or lower after dinner! It’s all very individual but overall I’m sure things will improve over time if you stay with it good luck

Hi @L1ncslass
My FBG were the last to come down and even now after 2 years of ultra low carb still seem to surprise me. I'm usually between 5 and 6 in the morning when I get up and rarely wake up below 5 these days. HbA1c are still in the high 20's though so seem to be ok with these levels. It took between 6 months and a year before they reached these levels so don't fret too much about them.

I have been eating 50g of cheese at night, so what did you eat?
Tonight I'm eating mackerel. Tinned in brine but drained very very well.

Sometimes I have smoked mackerel or like you cheese but cubed, to make it look more. Nuts used to work but almonds stopped as I was eating too many.
Bacon on its own or egg mayo on its own.
The fat carries me through the night as my dump is in waking. Whatever time that is.

I have to do a breakfast block too. Bulletproof coffee is good or a few nuts instead of a meal.
Is your bone broth fatty?

On insulin I try and limit the fat or I don't lose weight. Low carb is now 100g as 30-40g made me ill with palpitations and chest pains.

Thanks given me a few extra ideas not keen on mackerel as it is BUT I really do like mackerel pate [made with cream cheese, lemon zest & juice and horseradish] it was eating this that I got the light bulb moment. I noticed my BG went down when I ate this and made the connection that it was the fat and I needed to up the fat content in my food!

The bone broth is low in fat, made for the 'salt' and micronutrients which help combat the keto 'flu' I got when fasting.

I'm not drinking much coffee at the min [not that I drank a lot] as I wondered if it affected my cortisol levels.

Thanks for the tips!!
