Terrible dry hands

Can you give us a little more information ? Do you have diabetes, have you seen your GP ?

I personally don’t suffer with dry hands, but my mum does and she is T2. They think it may be related to her diabetes (but then again they think any ailment she has is related to it!).

she found the only thing which stops the peeling and dryness is the Body Shops hemp hand protector. It’s in a green tube and about £3.50. The reviews online are amazing!

Not sure of the science behind it, but may be worth a go as it’s quite cheap?
 
O’Keeffe’s Working Hands is very good. I no longer use it but found it a godsend in the past.
 
My GP currently prescribes big tubs of Zeroderm Ointment for me. It is quite soothing and a bit less greasy than vaseline. I do like the sound of the Body Shops hemp hand protector. @SB.25 thanks for the tip. I doubt I'll manage to get it on prescription, though.

Do you work in the building construction industry? Some concretes or plaster dusts can have (or have been known to) this effect with prolonged exposure..
 
I think the medication you mention is what my mum had on prescription - but she found the bodyshop hand protector to work better - perhaps give it a go

I think she may have used a discount code then? Body shop always have them - normally just google body shop discount code and they will come up. Just show the code on your phone if you buy in store or enter code online. I don’t think I’ve ever paid full price for something in the body shop lol!

I've always hated the way my hands look. Even when I was in my 20s I was told I had the hands of a 80 year old. I'm 59 now with type 2 diabetes. This is the first time I've seen hands that look kinda like mine. I never thought I could do anything about it , because I was born with bony hands. I've used creams over the years but never helped. I might try the hemp oil and see what it does. I'm going to try to add a picture of my hand to this comment.
 
 
I find all my skin dry so always use moisturising shower gel and hand cream and epaderm on feet plus Nivea liquid on body. Especially dry after swimming. Sunshine and suncream regularly is good in summer. Type 1 for 55yrs
 
Hello Juders, I'm so sorry you have had to add your dismay at the appearance of your hands to the burden of T2 diabetes. The person who said you had the hands of an 80-year-old was spiteful/malevolent/ totally tactless and incapable of empathy. (I don't care if it was your mother, that would just make her guilt worse!) Personally, I prefer skinny hands that show bones to plump ones. Just as well, as I am an under-weight 82-year old. What I don't much like is the great fat worms of veins that stand out on the backs of my hands & wrists. I used to dislike my brown sun/grave spots, but miraculously they seem to have faded away! I wish I knew what I did right. I suspect it was staying out of the bright sun, or just staying indoors more. The latter of course is not a good policy, for many other reasons.

I recently acquired some stretch bead bracelets, which I love. I didn't want to wear them and call attention to my enlarged veins. I have found a solution - ice silk fingerless mitts. They are very light, designed to protect from UV light. They do look a bit Miss Marple, but I will be glad if they stop the grave spots from coming back and I now feel I can wear my lovely bracelets with them without drawing attention to my ugliest feature.

Imo it is not possible to plump up bony hands except, perhaps, by gaining fat or/ heaven forbid, retaining fluid. For skin dryness, I am currently enjoying Batana Oil. It is primarily marketed for hair, but skin also gets a mention. Despite being called an oil, it is more of an ointment. Its texture resembles that of crystallised honey. Warning - it has a strange smell. In its favour, it contains no added chemicals.
