Test strip work around

I still can't get test strips, and can't afford them much either, I have been quite rough with the meds etc., feeling very tired and weak & work for myself trying to support a whole young family. I have cut out all food except fish, vegetable's (no root)nuts & seeds and no dairy.

Dropped 2.5 stone in 5 weeks. All this has been based around knowing my BS's, I haven't had a second Ha1bc test yet, but 1 thing is for sure I can't do any more to lessen things with my food intake.
I've put "my fitnesspal" app on my phone to keep an eye on the cal's (800-1350 per day) a bit low so I'm using some branch chain amino acids with the exercise to balance my BS's around 4.5-7.8.

I have worked a way to afford the test strips next month. The doctor has no problem prescribing me with erection pills, Viagra or what ever so I'm thinking about pulling a fakie; flogging the pills for £8-10 a shot to buy the test strips. There's funding for you.....DOC

WOW!! So basically you are going to lie to someone official who will record what you say and what they prescribe in your health records then sell on the black market drugs that you have got on a free prescription   I am hoping this is a tongue in cheek thing and you aren't really serious

I trust you're not serious! Diabetes.co.uk have your details on their database and you're openly admitting to a pre-meditated plan to defraud the NHS. If you are serious you're stupid posting such a thing on here. They're not that expensive and certainly not worth being prosecuted for. If it's a joke, I rescind the whole message. Why won't the doctor pay for something that is essential to the daily lifestyle and a fundamental staple to administering insulin dosage? This is dnagerous in itself and could cause you serious problems. I hope you manage to get this resolved. Have you spoken with the practice manager. This sounds like a dereliction of duty. I'd rather jack in the viagra. Can you negotiate or is the viagra more important than test-strips? No, thought not. See if they can compromise. Good luck, don't sell NHS products with your name on the box, mate - just in case ;) let us know what they have to say to justify their reckoning. If this is a national initiative I'll get me repeat scrips in now!

Ps: how can you get viagra and erection pills if you're female? Just curious as the dynamics are a little bit different in male and female plumbing department :) Lol.

There's more than one way to skin a cat !
Nice one fit2drop !
Don't let the sheep put you off !

I wouldn't go down this road, you can just buy the strips from ebay for around £10-£12 from Type 1's who sell prescribed ones on ebay. Or you could get a cheaper meter and strips such as the Codefree.

Just because I don't advocate breaking the law doesn't make me a sheep, I am far from wooly

OK..! This was just a comment to see what reactions were about & to let off some frustration.
Why? Well 2 reasons. one of which has been brought up here.
There has been more interest in my sexual health since my diagnosis 3 month ago than anything else. By this I mean comments like;

"if you have any man problems just come back in and we can fix that for you" etc. That's from 2 doctors and the dietician.
"No but I would like to know what is happening with my body & Bs's; can I get test strips?" You don't need to worry about that, why on earth would you want to prick holes in your figures! just take the pills and stay away from sweet things. What about carbs? Oh don't go down that route!! Here are some statins for you. Do I need them? Not at the moment but you might..!

That's my conversation with the doc's in a nut shell (I will add that I have a very bad dyslexia so I do cut things short, this has taken an hour so far. Sorry).

The second reason which was mentioned here, was to buy off ebay, quite a few people mentioned it to me. This is from a person who has been prescribed a nhs medication and then flogging it for a profit. I didn't think this was right some how, so I wanted to see what response the Viagra idea would take.

The Viagra idea sounds so wrong but in fact It is little different to the ebay concept and if anything, outside of selling a drug that might harm some one, the Viagra is more like a transfer of funds rather than shear profit.

I just bug's me that something that is quite simple has been made so difficult.

Any further comments most welcome.

I would have to agree with you Fit2, not about the ebay selling of little blue pills and test strips but about the way doctors are reluctant to prescribe test strips to T2's but quite happy to prescribe statins and viagra!!!

Its an interesting perspective you have put on this topic

Its a strange world we live in isnt it?

Seriously though I can only assume that the vast majority of doctors are unaware of the method of BG control that most of us follow and find effective, even in the face of the evidence of my HbA1c of 32 (5.1%) I still have trouble getting test strips prescribed since my GP has changed. And the only reason I do get a very small allowance is that I explained how I use them and a dietician has confirmed my diet is fine.

Still at least my GP isnt trying to push Statins at me and now that I have cut down on my Metformin I have actually saved the NHS money

*shrug* the viagra idea sounded quite good to me, i suppose growing up in a tower block in battersea gives a different perspective on things :)

Well done on the Hba Sid Bonkers  I am very new at all this but a preying for a low Hba (my 1st 89: 10-11%). Id rather them keep the metformin, I can't see any real difference between none one or two per day, Its my diet that make the difference.

I've spent just over 3 months on a very basic non enjoyable diet on the basis that when I go back in no blame can be placed on my diet and I feel "as if only id tried harder" or cut out a bit more. I have created a datum not a variable.

I'm 43 now and have worked all my life self-employed never been off sick; couldn't afford that. Have paid my duties and taxes, never claimed anything.
So I do get tired of hearing about NHS, Government, Council monies, when It belongs to the people; not GP's, Consultants, MP's and other civil servants swanning around Europe for meetings and extended holidays, when they have board rooms normally onsite here in the UK, (We do have video conferencing) The waste is massive, and do you know that a vast amount of people on that side of the fence are incompetent in what they do anyway. This is not personal!! Its fact >>>

Do you have a diabetic nurse or do you belong to a clinic at your local hospital you can get them there for free with many other supplies.good luck

As a type 2, getting test strips on the NHS is like pulling hens teeth. Buy mine privately and have refused both the metformin and statins that were handed out to me like sweets on the day I was diagnosed. Have adapted diet and saved the NHS 9 years of prescriptions! Doesn't stop them from trying to push statins on me every year though...but test strips, get refused every time I see my diabetic nurse and as for low carb diet...the dietitian refused to continue seeing me if I did LCHF or reduced my carbs below 130g a day!!! Go figure :S

if he put his prescription Viagra on ebay and bought by the one selling his prescription T1's strips...that would be ethically ok wouldn't it? it works out to be just an exchange.

At the moment I am getting the strips on prescription just picked up my 3rd lot since sept, wonder how long it will last.
