Theory About Chocolate, sweets in general

I am currently desperate to gain weight, at least 2-3 stone is the target. I know that i am underweight due to bad sugar level control and generally not eating enough. So I have now set out a diet plan and am constantly blood testing to keep them stable. What i'm curious about, is, if you keep your sugar levels at a good rate would you still gain the weight from the calories in chocolate bars. Might be a silly question but would be interested to see what other people say. I am of course aware that sweets and chocolate should be a treat, and not eaten regularly, but sometimes my sweet tooth is too overpowering.

The short answer is yes.. assuming that you are managing your blood sugars correctly and not missing insulin.. then if calories in less calories out is a positive number then that will be stored as fat.. The issue is if you eat a load of carbohydrate and don't have enough insulin then your body will not process that carbohydrate.

Rather than just scoffing a load of sweets and chocy bars might it not be a good idea to ask for a referral to see a dietician? Their not there just to help people loose weight and they will be able to advice you on nutrition.

And given the standard advice to eat carbs with every meal , even they should manage to get you a weight gain

Like it!

Rather than using chocolate to gain weight, apart from the fun of satisfying your sweet urges, why not stuff things like nuts? I found that a good way to keep my weight up a bit without raising my BGs. Presumably, that would mean someone on insulin wouldn't have to counter with so much extra doses?

Is it possible to gain weight without increasing your BG??? I know I could easily put on weight by eating Lasagna Sandwiches for every meal - but my BG would be horrific if I did that.

I always assumed that with high BG's, you body stored the exta glucose as fat. So if your BG is not running high, what is your body going to store as fat?

:***: Did you mean GAIN weight?? Otherwise, wouldn't the answer be "stop eating anything"?

I did mean GAIN weight. I've changed it now...

(It's so rare that I ever write "gain weight"... )

First of all I would make sure your weight loss is solely down to your 'bad sugar level control and generally not eating enough' than any other cause, there's some advice here from the NHS website:

I would not expect that to work; after all, Dr Bernstein himself describes how he was unable to induce weight gain by making his patients drink (olive?) oil - after getting them to eat more protein failed due to them not being able to eat enough protein.

I am on a weight gain lowering BGs plan it is not easy to balance but I eat lots of cheese, butter and cream .Snack on nuts also low carb crackers loaded with pate or cream cheese and tuna .I can manage a small amount of lentils in soup. I eat lots of veg with butter and pepper and a square or two of very dark choc sometimes made into mousse with double cream .Dont be afraid of dieticians I explained how I wanted to restrict carbs to keep my BGs down and she was very helpful ,if you get a bad one just ignore the advice :?

If you want to gain weight eat lots of calories.. if you want to gain weight and maintain glucose levels eat lots of fat.. that said.. in order to maintain the new weight you need to come up with an eating plan you can stick to.. the best advice I have is eat cheese..

Hi all!

Avocado is great for low-carb weight gain. Chop up an avocado, chop a couple slices of ham, add a handful of walnuts and some pumpkin seeds - filling, delicious and fattening! Olives are great -very fattening and no carb. - watch the salt though! A couple of slices of ham topped with Brie and microwaved for 30 seconds - roll up ham and eat as snack.
