This has NOTHING to do with Diabetes......

1-1 second half extra time, Brazil on top! Going to pens, maybe?

Chile hits post in last minute, loving this!

Gone to pens, on the edge of my seat ........... computer!

Chile's work rate is astonishing, but I'm not completely surprised. I lived there for a while and I'm sure they routinely do high altitude training because (amongst other reasons) some of their leading teams are at high(ish) altitude. I once went to a game in Calama in the north, on the edge of the Atacama Desert, at about 2300 m. One of the local teams, Cobreloa, were entertaining one of the leading Santiago teams, Colo Colo. Cobreloa just held on in the first half, no goals, then stuck three past them in the second half when Colo Colo were knackered.

Alexis Sanchez man of the match for me.

Chile play areal high tempo game hence they lose the ball a lot more than they would like to. They counteract this by the system they use. 3-5-1-1
They pressure the ball to create mistakes, and hassle and hurry up the opposition. The 5 midfielders interchange to whoever is closest to the ball closes or tracks back. Well done Chile, no matter the pen shoot out lottery

Brazil through on a poor quality penalty shoot out!

Have I enough energy for the next one?

Great goal, think Columbia will go on to win comfortably

URAGUAY have left the building.................... Good 2-0 result Columbia :)

Nerves and exhaustion got the better of both teams. I hate penalty shoot outs and last nights game is the reason why, I just wish they would play the Golden Goal rule although time ia an issue of course in the World Cup.

I'm not a fan cos it'll about what baggage is your head!
Unfortunately, it's the best of any of the other ideas! You just can't keep on playing over 120 mins + stoppage time! even that is far too much in the heat and humidity!

Well, great time in the pub on Friday and no hangover yesterday which is a bonus (although I seem not to get them anymore).

I thought Brazil v Chile was a great game, Howard Webbs decision was the right one (IMO), and Chile were desperately unlucky not to have won the game. I still think this is the weakest Brazil team in years and they'll come unstuck when they meet a higher quality team.

I watched the first half of Columbia v Uruguay and think James Rodriguez' goal is the goal of the tournament so far. I then turned the TV over to watch the mighty Metallica at Glastonbury, all I can say is wow!

This is one of the best world cups that I've seen (so far), and while I agree that the play acting, fouling and cuddling at corners etc is getting ridiculous, it really is nothing new. Remember Carvalho going down like he'd been hit by a bus and Ronaldo winking when Beckham got sent off? Ronaldinho getting a ball kicked in his shin and going down clutching his face?
Nothing will change until a big match result (I.e. the World Cup final) is affected, influenced or changed and FIFA will be forced to deal with the issue. Until then it will be down to the ref.

I'm predicting Holland and Costa Rica to go through tonight.

Brazil v Chile was a great game and a shame that Chile didn't win it at the end of extra time when they hit the bar. Penalties is always unsatisfying (though gripping!) but you have to draw a line somewhere. I don't like golden goal because it can just lead to defensiveness through extra time due to fear leading to penalties anyway.

My other gripe while I'm about it is players surrounding the referee protesting every time there's a controversial decision or just something they disagree with. Sure, a ref can make mistakes - they're only human - but they don't need to be intimidated on the field. In rugby nobody questions the ref except politely just to enquire the reason for a decision. Again I think technology should be brought to bear and the ref given the opportunity to review video footage at the time, and possibly have his decision overruled by other refs off the field (as in appeals in cricket). I don't buy the argument that says it would break up the game too much - what does a mass of players surrounding the ref do already?

A sin bin might also be a good move instead of (or as well as) a yellow card. Player overreacts when fouled and feigns injury? - give him 10 or 15 minutes off the field, and if he complains send him off.

Yes some good points about the heat and such, it's still a cruel way to decide a match and you do feel for the players involved in the penalty shoot-out.
