I was diagnosed with Type 2 3 years ago. So far I have managed to stay off medication. I am really struggling to lose weight as I have an underactive thyroid. My medication for this is reviewed frequently I am not hugely heavy - 10stone 6lbs and 5'4". I have now been told I will probably have to start taking metformin soon. What more can I do to avoid this? I have a very healthy diet, with low carbohydrate. For example I know that my thyroid must be out of kilter again as I have put on 4lbs in the last 2 weeks, and my diet has not changed. Is anyone else in this position?

Type 1 and hypothyroxic--on levothyroxine--

Type 2 and also on Levothyroxine

I am also having weight problems - as in finding it difficult to lose any. I have never been so active, aqua aerobics, gym and daily walk. I am due another blood test at the end of this month for blood and thyroid levels.

I don't have a problem being on metformin (at the moment) but am trying to get off the gliclazide as that encourages weight gain.

I just can't seem to figure out why people are so freaked out about taking metformin. I am not someone that looks for a pill for all my answers but metformin is well studied, safe, helps with insulin resistance and liver dumps, also helps with weight loss and apparently helps protect against some cancers. The common side effects are tummy and bowel upset which for most people go away after a few days. This is just my opinion and I am well aware that it is not for everyone.

Metformin can help you lose weight! I have been on thyroxine for 32 years. Since being diagnosed in February I have had problems balancing metformin, gliclazide and thyroxine! ! I am about to get my thyroxine increased again, I am on 200mgs already. I would just say since following LCHF and becoming a druggy person I have for the first time in many years lost 2.5 stone! So I would not be oiveralky concerned. Good luck.

I too have thyroid problems for some 50 years and at the moment take 175 mgr thyroxine. I take 2x500 mgr of Metformin for T2D. (Plus a variety of tablets for for a variety of illnesses.)
I have reduced my weight from 13stone 3 lbs to 10 stone 9 lbs since Sept 2015. Height 5ft 8ins.
Exercise is brisk walking several miles per day. (min 2 miles).
Fortunately I have not suffered from any of the common problems with Metformin.
I can only agree with chalup and 6cats regarding Metformin, although I am aware that everybody is different.

I know this sounds simple but when do you take your thyroid drug and is it levothyroxine?
I needed to take mine 1 hour before food/drink on a morning. When I didnt it wasnt as affective.
I recently did a very low carb diet and my levothyroxine became more potent, if fact gave me an overactive thyroid.
Kelp/seaweed is to be avoided in underactive thyroid sufferers. Seafood and certain veg can interfer with the thyroid function too.
Stress can interfer with diabetes and thyroid function.
I hope this helps. Vicky :-)

My TSH came back last week at 21.33 - I was horrified! So I too have been looking at how to make my Levothyroxine more effective.

I was advised (reminded) to take my thyroxine on the dot of waking up, on an empty stomach.

Have been doing that and we'll see! I take 200mcg Levothyroxine per day as my thyroid has been irradiated.

Curiously I have no symptoms of being hypothyroid, so that's something.

:)

I actually take my Thyroxin last thing at night - Some studies have shown that taking it with coffee stop it working and that taking it in the evening can improve its absorbtion. My mum also does the same.

I've never been told anything about when I should take Levothyroxine. The leaflet just says before breakfast. I am seeing the
doctor on Monday so will ask then.

I had also been told to take in first thing in the morning and with water, not caffeine and to then eat, I take 125mcg and I have a blood test every 6 months to check it.

I was advised that the time best time to take your thyroid tablets is first thing in the morning when you get up. Blood pressure tables should be taken at night before going to be to be effective. I am sure most people just take all their medications all at once for convenience.

It's a difficult one to balance my GP tells me because it is all endocrine! It's interesting reading comments, I take mine first thing with Metformin and Gliclazide! I am now wondering as I have just had mine reduced if I should be taking it separately and, if the LCHF diet has any bearing!? I wish somebody could sort this out! I have really suffered from the 'over cooking' aptly named by my GP, I have found the heat intolerance very difficult!

I have always taken my Levothyroxine first thing with water.175 mgs. (Just now been reduced to 150 mgs). Maybe my thyroid gland has regrown. Dont laugh. It got radio active iodine in the '70's. It stopped my singing and whistling, but I still can't play the piano.:singing:
