Hi im not sure whether i have diabetes or not atm iv had some contrasting readings but was just looking rfor some advise, iv had this ulnar nerve contrapment for months now and was just wondering if diabetes can effect your nerves straight away or if it tends to happen when youve had it a while. Its just iv been to my doctor and iv told him iv had reading of like 8mmol and a few others after eating but because iv had a fasting reading of 5 and 5.1 for the 3 month reading he says its doesnt matter what the random and readings after meals are. Iv read that this is not true. Im having othe symptoms like the hunger and urinating more. Also just having tingling in my arms and in my foot was just wondering if it was common for this sort of thing to come on quickly? Would appreciate any advice im really struggling with it, thanks.

I think the neuropathy and tingling would not be a quick sympton, likely brought on over years. If you are not convinced with your initial diagnosis, go back to see your doc and ask for another test. Or better, is there a different doc you can see ? Good luck.

thanks mo for the response, the doctor says heel only do the 3 month test, iv been to the chemist and had fasting tests around 5.2 and below, its just iv checked myself after meals and sometimes its been quite high. just the fact im weeing quite a lot aswell and bin hungary, i do struggle quite a bit with anxiety but it just seems different, just dont no what to do to be sure or not?

Even non diabetics will have high readings after eating. Difference is, their pancreas will kick and and bring them down. You pre meal readings are pretty good. Try doing a test a couple of hours after eating. If you are diabetic, they should still be fairly high. If they go back to near on pre meal readings, you're probably not diabetic. As for frequent urinating, I'm no doc but this could be many things. I think you need to keep pestering your doc. Sometimes you need to be a bit of a nuisance to see action. Good luck !

Those readings seem OK to be honest. Maybe a little high but certainly not diabetic I don't think. Keep badgering your doc though, you know your own body and if you don't feel right, they should listen.

Everyone's BG levels go up when they eat things like pasta , rice and, worst of all, white bread. It comes down again in non diabetics but takes much longer to come down in diabetics. The problem is when it takes so long to come down that it's time for the next meal so, for a diabetic, it's up again before it has come properly down. Consequently the average is higher.

ye i get wat ya mean, it jus seems be higher after those sort of meals but its pretty normal again after 2-3 hours, its jus i keep needing the toilet and feeling hungary which i have read are symptoms of diabetes. i checked after an our of eating soup and bread yesterday and it was 4.5, its normally around 5.1-5.3 fasting. its jus because i keep feeling hungary i jus cant stop thinkiing i have early diabetes, do symptoms like needing to use the toilet a lot and feeling hungary usually occur when your sugars have been high for a while or when its a relatively new thing? the doctor wnt check anything else because that 3 month average was within the normal range, jus doesnt seem theres a simple answer.

Lots of things cause those symptoms, including losing weight. Diabetes symptoms are more feeling thirsty and needing the loo, rather than feeling hungry and needing the loo. Typically diabetics need the loo a lot to wee out excess glucose but, because they go to the loo a lot, they are thristy. They can also feel 'hung over' because they get dehydrated.

how much would you say is goin to the loo a lot. its jus i have something goin wrong with me and i do seem to have a lot of the symptoms of diabetes. just want to find out what it is then i can do something about it. thinking about it i do drink quite a bit its just i noticed i was feeling hungary and tired around the time i was using the toilet quite a bit. is there a certain time you can test your b/g to either say i have this or not?sorry to bother you just trying to find an answer.

i spoke to the pharmacist today and they said go in tommorow for a fasting test and that will determine it, iv read a lot of things saying you can have a normal fasting level and still have like pre-diabetes is it?
i just seem to be weeing a lot
got a dry mouth
always hungary
sweating a lot when im doing things like walking
and getting tingling and some numbness in my left foot

just seems impossible to not be diabetes as they seem to be the halmark symptoms, sorry to post again just dont really have anyone to talk to about it jus getting me really down.

The only way to find out if you have diabetes or not is to have your bloods tested. I was diagnosed with diabetes but had shown no symptoms whatsoever. It was picked up during an annual checkup. There are so many things that can cause similar symptoms, it is not a good idea to speculate. Lots of 1st year medical students do that by the way. They convince themselves that they have all sorts of exotic and rare diseases.

Yes there is a stage called prediabetes. If suitable actions are taken, change of diet, weight loss, more exercise, progression onto diabetes can be avoided. Even if it is not caught in time, type 2 diabetes appears to be reversible. It is reported that half of people who have even had it for 4 years can still reverse it. It's all rather vague though because diabetes is progressive with more and more insulin producing beta cells becoming damaged over time. Whilst time is one factor the other is how the diabetic approaches his or her diabetes. Some are very careful, some make major changes, some rely on medication but eat normally, some ignore it altogether. There are many different reactions.

kool thanks again maybe its anxiety causing my symptoms i eat pretty well and try and avoid sugars jus not bin playing footy and going to the gym and than the last 6 months or so mayb il go back to the doc n see what he says, cheers.
