I was just diagnosed with type 1 diabetes on Sunday. It's pretty overwhelming and I'm scared and anxious about what I can and can't eat, right now I'm on 5 shots a day (2 long acting and 3 short acting) I'm eating 3 meals a day and checking my bloods correctly, the lowest result I have gotten so far is 5.2 and my ketones levels are at 0.0 I was just wondering what sweets or chocolate I vlild maybe have? Or can anyone recommend any snacks that I could have if I feel peckish? Thanks

Hi :) It sounds like you're doing very well already :)

Are you counting carbs and adjusting your insulin depending on what you eat? If you're at all unsure, always check with your nurse first.

I eat pretty much the same as I ate before I became diabetic, but I have to watch the quantities and the timing of what I eat if it's a sweet treat.

Is there anything in particular you fancy?

Thanks for replying @azure I'm not fussy with what I eat I love fruit and sweet things, right now I'd love a small chocolate bar.
I'm just new to this so my doses are set to 6. I have not been taught carb counting and stuff yet and adjusting my insulin.
I also suffer from anxiety and depression and it's hard being 18 and having friends who don't really understand what's going on, feel pretty alone

Well done @podlav, you seem to coping well.

Some snacks you may have to bolus for, but as your newly diagnosed you may get away eating snacks up to 10g of carbs without the need to inject, only your postprandial bg levels will determine this.

I stopped snacking between meals a few years back, but if you want some suggestions how about some nuts/seeds, oatcakes like Nairns Cheese which contain around 4g of carbs each or some >80% Cocoa Content Dark Chocolate, also fruits like strawberries, blueberries are quite lowish in carbs.

Thanks for the reply @noblehead I will try nuts, I love blueberries so will have them!

Love blueberries too, I have them every morning with my porridge, buy the frozen ones from Aldi which are extremely cheap and of good value, the fresh ones can be quite expensive depending on the time of year.

@noblehead it's good to know there's so many helpful people out there, I feel so much better now, thanks for making my day :)

Hi @podlav well done on your management so far you seem to be doing really well in these early days!
Treats for me is cheese, I love the stuff and it doesn't have any effect on your bg :D you could eat a small bar of chocolate as long as you inject for it and just dont go eating like a family size bar of dairy milk you'll be ok lol
I can tolerate most fruits without my bg going crazy but some people can barely have any so you're best to test before and after having say an apple, and see what goes on with your readings :)

I wish I liked blueberries, there's something about them that makes me squirm lol

Hope you carry on with the positive attitude and good control you're doing great

Abbie :)

@Mrsass thanks so much, I feel much better now I've heard from other people who have diabetes. And I love cheese this is great news haha :)

I'm only new to having type 1 diabetes but in the last few weeks I have found a few things that haven't really affected my bg! Crackers with abit of cheese, cheese strings and cucumber also sugar free jelly is a nice sweet treat!.. Not many things on my list so far but it's a start haha

May i welcome you to the forum, and reccomend a book by Dr Richard Bernstein " Diabetes Solution 4th edition" so very knowledgeable and helpful plus he's been t1 for over 55 yrs, clive

Sounds like you are doing well, keep positive!

Treats...hmm...remember I am talking about myself here...but if I want a chocolate bar, I have it! I just do my insulin and check my blood sugar levels to see if I can have it.

Hi, thank you I will look into finding that book. Any help/advice is much needed for us 'newbies'!

as a type 1 diabtic you don't really have to stop eating what you enjoy that's where carb counting becomes a godsent :).

For now as you are on set ratios avoid anything sugar free unless your constapated :p
Live life as you normaly would, you control diabetes, not the other way around.
Ask the nurses to stick you on a Dafne/Daffyd course depending where you're from.

I eat chocolate :) When I was first diagnosed, I didn't have any for a few weeks as i was busy getting used to carb counting and testing and injections.

You can either speak to your DSN about an appropriate amount of insulin to,cover a small bar of chocolate, or you could perhaps do what I do sometimes, which is to eat a bar on a walk or before exercising. Another thing I do is make a bar of chocolate last by having a piece or two at a time.

Push to be taught carb counting - it's crucial to good control (and to being able to vary your diet)

haha i eat bags of it like them minieggs <3 #guilty but tastes so good;.

Heya don't worry you will soon find your rhythm with this, my treats now consist of pork crackling, cheese, olives and dark chocolate. You soon realise the impact of sugar spikes so adjusting makes life and health easier. Welcome and good luck ;)

Hi, my snacks consist of olives with feta cheese, cracker bread with a little Hummous and cucumber and I've also found some rice cakes in asda that have a very thin layer of chocolate on that are under 10g carbs and don't seem to affect my bg levels. I'm also newly diagnosed you seemed to have stabilised your levels quickly - well done

Snap. 3 + 1 injections for a week now and lowest BG=12.
I use Boots no added sugar Carmel Drops - just to remind me of sweets!
You seem to be doing well.
