Hi all is turmeric safe to take for Type 2 folk? I asked Holland and Barrett and they said that it wasn't.

I use it a lot in cooking not done me any harm so far and it is believed by some to reduce blood sugar levels a bit.

I use it a lot in cooking, it is reported to help with glucose levels, I don’t use it for that purpose I just like the spice

As a side note H&B were wrong to say that to you, they are not supposed to give medical advice unless it’s specifically on the packaging. What they should have said is speak to your GP to see if you cannot use it regarding your medical conditions or any meds you are taking. Bit like here really

You may find this article interesting:

I take turmeric for inflammation - never noticed it making a blind bit of difference to blood glucose levels.

I’ve just found out turmeric is a chelater (negates) for the absorption of iron. Worth bearing in mind if your haemoglobin or ferretin is non optimal. Shame cos I used it a lot.

Hi @HSSS, yes but that is only the case whilst the Tumeric is in your digestive system, so if you had, for example, spinach and eggs for breakfast and then something with Tumeric in it for lunch/later in the day you'd absorb the iron from the spinach and get the anti-inflammatory benefits from the Tumeric but they wouldn't interfere with each other. Maybe ask/speak to a nutritionist about it?

I used to have daily supplements of turmeric, which never seemed to do me any harm (that I knew of anyway), but when I mentioned this to the (senior) pharmacist, in the advanced heart failure clinic at my hospital, she nearly "had kittens"!!! She told me to stop taking it immediately (unfortunately I'd not long spent a lot of money buying the stuff). Apparently, as mentioned above by HSSS, because I have an iron deficiency, I must not take anything that further absorbs/depletes the iron in my body. This offsets any positive health benefits that turmeric might have. There was no mention (and nor did I notice) any effects, positive or negative, on my blood sugar levels. Does anybody want a couple of spare, large bottles of turmeric?? ha ha ha! Cheers, DB1.
