Type 1.5 Diabetes

I have just read an article about this condition, which is often diagnosed as type 2, but is suffered by people who do not experience the other symptoms of type 2, i.e. excess weight, high Blood Pressure, High Cholesterol.

I was diagnosed 3 years ago as a type 2, despite being not being seriously overweight, BMI 26 now down to 22, but have always had a low BP, all readings consistently over last 20+ years 110/45 and cholesterol 3.5 at worst 4 currently 2.9. At rest heart rate 50bpm and has been since I was 18. I am now 53.

I am taking 1 x metformin 500mg twice a day, last HBaC1 GP said was so low as not readable, when I asked, he said it was less than 4.

Despite all this I have a blood blister on my right big toe that will not, 10 weeks now, heal up and a small sore on my left upper instep, that will also not heal for 9 weeks now.

It has been like this all my life, well since I was 18, which is about as far back as I can remember, in that I do not heal well from injuries, broken bones taking three month plus to set and heal up, scars not forming properly for about 4-5 weeks, stitches being removed after two weeks as per normal and then having to be re-stitched again due to wound not closing up; used to play rugby and then cycled a lot. In fact when I have had operations to repair injuries, four in the last 6 years, I come round with an oxygen mask on my face and told to keep it there for 24 hours due to low blood oxygen levels.

I have asked the GP about the foot problems and he seems unfazed about them, they do not hurt, just look unsightly. I have never seen an endocrinologist yet as my GP is the Diabetes Specialist in the Practice, should I ask for an appointment to see one. I did have a bad hypo about two months ago, BG went down to 2.1 on the meter and felt awful.

Hi
I shouldn't think all the symptoms you describe are down to diabetes. Some of them I've never heard of before.
I can only suggest you search around the internet. You may find other people with the same syndrome.
Diabetes type 1.5 is usually described as a slow onset T1 type, which appears in adults and is sometimes mistaken for T2. It is a type of T1, in that the pancreas is gradually stopping making insulin.
T2 is down to insulin resistance.

hi Henry
an HB1Ac of "less than 4" is not good at all, simply too low - it means you must be in "hypo" territory quite a bit of the time. Makes me wonder why you're on Metformin, as it doesn't seem necessary. Have you discussed this with your doctor?

Hi Henry,
You need some specialist input asap. As Dobbs says, your numbers are too low and you really need to sort this out. Your GP is not taking this seriously enough IMHO.

Catherine.

Hi Henry, I am diagnosed as Type 1.5 diabetic. My doctor has stated that I have both type 1 (LADA) and type 2. I ave severe insulin resistancy, which I have been told is genetic from the fathers side.

Hope you get somethng sorted soon.
