Type 1 - Can I drive a Van ?

I am glad you asked this question because in one of the leaflets my GP gave me it says that if you have diabetes you have to report it to both the insurance and DVLA. The DN however told me that you only have to report it if you are using insulin. So it's best to phone and ask them directly which I will do on Monday.

You need to be more specific as to the size/weight of your van?

well i would say if you have complied with the law and told the DVLA about your condition and they have issued you with a license, probably a 3 year restricted one like mine, if the said license has the category allowing you to drive a van your can drive a van. Check your license if like most it has category B on it you can drive a any vehicle with a MAM (Maximum authorised mass) not exceeding 3500kg

depends on what type of van, i was a self employed courier a few years ago but i was only driving a small van Astra van, combos that type. i also worked for a distribution company and was driving transit and box van (3.5 tonnes) and thier insurance company wanted a letter from my doctor stating that my diabetes was under control.

you cant drive 7 tonnes and above im afraid to say but anything under that you should be fine

This depends when you license was issued as you need category c1 do drive above 3500kg and a few years ago they removed this from the standard driving license

I think that what these posts are showing is that if you ask 10 different people you will get 10 different opinions on what you might or might not be able to drive!

Do what Ken (cugila) suggested and check on the DVLA website for yourself using thye link that Ken provided - their website is always kept bang up to date and only the DVLA can tell you what the current regulations are.
