Type 1 Diabetes and weight loss- help needed!

Type of diabetes
Type 1
I've been type 1 diabetic for 5 years and my weight was never an issue until the last year where I have put on a stone and a bit. It's getting me really down and according to my BMI I am over weight ( who thought 10st9 would be over weight?!) anyway I've been dieting and exercising for a while but my weight isn't budging. Does anybody have some good advice on how to lose the weight healthily without making myself worse?

Hi there @charlottelucy93
welcome to the forum:)

losing weight can be really difficult when taking insulin -- but not impossible.

I struggled with weight loss for a few years until ( with the help of my dietician ) we decided I was good to try the modified newcastle diet ( basically 3 tesco ultra slim shakes per day ( 25.4 carbs per shake - 600 calories for 3 shakes)
and a big plate of green veg for evening meal ( approx 200 cals )

i lost 11 pounds in a month on this diet -- and was able to stick to about 1000 calories per day total ( including sweets for treating hypos from a changed routine )

Has your diet changed in the last year ? More fat, grain or dairy? More protein? Are you requiring larger insulin doses ?

@charlottelucy93 Can you think of any change in your life that made you put on weight? Sometimes even a small change can affect your weight.

I've found that adjusting the amount of daily carbs is the best way to reduce or increase weight. It may also be helpful to keep a food diary for a week. It's easy to underestimate what you're eating, so looking back over the results something may leap out at you as a possible cause.

Have your thyroid levels been checked and also have you had any change in exercise amounts?

I've have my thyroids checked many times but they've come back as completely normal. I think it's my own doing because when I was having hypos I would have too many carbs/sugars for what I needed. Also I would snack a lot and s lot of the time not count what I was having unless it was super high in sugar. I also went on the contraceptive pill last year and I think that's rocketed my weight

My insulin doses have definitely increased because I was having a lot more carbs than I needed. I'm sticking to less calories per day with exercise aka the gym or going for a long walk to burn extra calories. I've also lowered my insulin doses which seems to be working and my blood sugars seem much better
