Hey guys,
Lately my sugar levels are through the roof as high as 20mmol with no sign of coming down I have increased my novarapid from 6 units to 8 and 10 even that doesn't lower it i have also increased my levemir from 10 units to 12 again with no success.

I have also tried drinking plenty of water, watching what I eat and exercising and nothing is working.

My gp has said because my ketones are normal at 0.1 they can't do do anything and the same for the hospital.

Basically I'm at loose ends.

How long have you been diagnosed?

Could you be ill or under stress? That can cause highs.

Have you done a basal test? And do you count carbs and adjust your meal time insulin accordingly?

Your basal is pretty low, at least compared to mine. Could that be it? 8 take about 26 units of Lantus, and it sounds like my basal rates of Novorapid are similar to yours.

I find insulin loses a lot of its effect when I'm in a stressful situation too, annoyingly! Anything else changed recently?

Just over a year,
I was ill a few weeks ago, yes I'm a bit stressed but not overly stressed.
Yes I do test numerous times... yes I do carb count

It could be your 'honeymoon' coming to an end and your insulin needs increasing then.

The first thing to do is a basal test. That's the foundation of good control. Once you've checked that's ok, then move on to looking at your meal ratios.

Are you correcting your highs? If so, remember that sugar above approx 13 usually needs more insulin due to increased insulin resistance eg if 1 unit usuallly drops you 3mmol, it may only drop you 1.5mmol if you're 20, just as an example.

@leking
Only going to the toilet a lot more
I'm more stressed because I can't get my levels down which isn't helping

Hi @Emosi
I agree with @azure
it sounds as though your honeymoon period may be coming to an end which will mean an increased need for insulin

Have you looked at basal testing here https://mysugr.com/basal-rate-testing/

also -- it might be a good idea to invest in the book -- Think Like A pancreas
this should help to get you back in the zone !!

all the best !

I just had a thought - have you tested your Glucometer? Sometimes they breakdown or provide incorrect readings - if there is a non-diabetic nearby get them to test themselves and if they too are very high it might be the meter.

Prob needing to basal test and to also check whether your basal and bolus are about the same amounts each day ie 50/50..

Also depends on the times when you see increases... ie can you go to bed normal, wake up high and then battle to get them down?

Are you still eating when levels are at 20, are you giving yoyrself an increase in bolus when above 12?

Also we are now into winter and generally eat foods that are a little different, so this can affect our levels. Ie I always know my insulin needs always change when the clocks change and for the following 6 weeks can be hell... like a wearwolf!!

Just try and try not to get anxious. You will get them down.

Or are you possibly giving one shot of levemir a day when it may be necessary for two?
