Type 1: Ignorance at work.

Hello everyone. I have had a horrendous day at work. I’m so angry and upset. I’ve never been treated this way, and I’m struggling to get to sleep. Since I can’t sleep, I thought I would share with you all my experience.

Today my supervisor came up to me during work. She said: “Some staff members feel uncomfortable with you injecting yourself in front of them. From now on, you will need to treat you diabetes in another room.”

I was confused. Firstly, I have never injected myself in front of people. Heck, I haven’t injected myself for over a year now; I wear an insulin pump! I then realised she was referring to when I prick my arm to check my glucose level. I did that today at lunch, after a co-worker had told me to join them at their table with the other staff members (I was the last one to get there, so I ended up just grabbing a chair and sitting outside their circle while they chatted).

I was shocked, I was upset and I was angry. I kept myself together for the first thirty minutes, but then I ended up bursting into tears. Someone told me to go to the back room, so I did. The person asked me what was wrong, and after I told them what had happened, they said: “I didn’t realise you were so sensitive”. She left, telling me to take all the time I needed to calm down. Another female co-worker came into the room. She repeated what my supervisor had said, and then continued to say that I was blowing this all out of proportion, that there were ‘plenty of rooms’ in the building that I could use to check my glucose levels in the future. When I told her I didn’t feel that I should have to do that (still crying), she frowned and said that I was being rude, that I wasn’t thinking about the position I was putting other people in. I felt like I was talking to a brick wall. She left.

Another co-worker comes in. She ignores the fact that I’m crying and goes to get some water. She then says, her voice bored and exasperated, “So are you just going to stay in here now, or are you going to take over from Lisa who is covering at you workstation?” The question surprised me. I said I didn’t know. I’m just trying to calm myself down. “Well I need to know so I can start delegating people.”

I went back to my workstation, my breath hiccupping, doing my absolute best to not cry in front of customers.

None of these women seemed to understand why I was crying. They thought they saw an overly sensitive girl crying over something silly. They saw me as someone wasting time and causing them issues. They saw me as being rude.

Why was I the only one who saw discrimination?

I’m going to send a letter to my manager tomorrow telling them how I feel. Has anyone here had similar experiences?

How awful for you and how heartless and insensitive of your co-workers to treat you in such a callous and discriminatory manner. You have every right to be upset and I hope you get some redress from the manager.

Some people get very queasy around needles and/or blood... even in teeny, tiny amounts. People are so ignorant about things. For all we know your co-workers think that diabetes is contagious. My opinion: they are wrong and you are also being overly sensitive. This does not rise to the level of something to be bothered by. Let it go and do your meter reading away from them. They will never "get it."

Thank you John. I tried to explain to one of them that it was like telling a breastfeeding mother, 'Ew, gross. Don't do that in front of people from now on', but I don't think they understood. I will be sending my email to the manager today.

@MissCuppa Something very similar happened to me at work. Someone made an anonymous complaint.

To say I was furious is an understatement! I was shaking - both with anger and upset. I completely understand why you feel so worked up about it. It's a horrible feeling.

I'm normally a quiet person and don't like to make a fuss, but when my manager told me about this complaint I was really outraged. I mean, it's bad enough having diabetes, and you'd think other people would be sympathetic and think "Thank good, I don't have to do all that" I asked my manager what else might offend the complainant - someone in a wheelchair, someone pregnant, someone missing an eye? I said that I'd be making a counter complaint, saying that the person was invading my privacy and discriminating against me. I told my manager that the person obviously didn't have enough work to do, as they seemed more interested in staring at me and what I was doing.

It's making me furious even thinking about it again now!

My manager spoke to the complainant and I never heard another word about it. I think I scared her with the strength of my feeling!

Don't be bullied - carry on testing (discreetly, of course) and tell people to mind their own *#%^+* business!

@MissCuppa you are not being over sensitive - you have every right to feel upset & angry! Well done on getting through the day & well done on not just rolling over & taking it - that is amazing & strong.

Obviously, you know this kind of treatment is discrimination & unacceptable. To help you in writing your letter to your manager, have a look at this information on your rights in work as a diabetic - https://www.diabetes.org.uk/Upload/How we help/Avocacy/Advocacy pack_EmploymentV3-Jan2016.pdf

I'm sure the behaviour of your colleagues just comes from ignorance - if they had any idea no right thinking person would have an issue with seeing a person test their blood sugar, they would just be grateful it's not them with a spring loaded drawing pin at their finger tip. Ignorance can be cured - I'd be strongly tempted to discuss with my manager sending an email to everyone explaining what diabetes is & putting in very blunt terms that I have to test my blood sugar to avoid kidney failure & amputation, maybe with pictures, but then I do have a very strong passive aggressive streak & it definitely isn't your job to cure their ignorance!

So sorry to read this @MissCuppa some people can be just nasty. I'd write to your manager today telling them how you feel, but also keep to facts so they don't put it down to you 'getting all emotional'. You have a recognised condition and should be treated fairly in the workplace, not bullied.

I hope things get better, am sending you a big hug and also saying don't let the buggers get you down :)

Why should you hide away to test your bs - I am T2 so I would probably test in "private" - but then for me it's not a life saving act - for someone with T1 who's blood sugar is very low it's vital that they test there and then - it is discrimination - would you tell someone with epilepsy to move themselves to a different room before a seizure? Someone with Tourette's to go tick somewhere else? someone with a stutter to spit it out?

I don't think they get the reason why you are upset. A letter is a very good idea as it gives you the chance to be objective in what you want to say rather than getting emotional and upset - good luck and let us know how it goes (())

Wow, the people you work with sound like jerks.

I hope that you can get some redress for the way you've been treated. I really hope that you can educate them and restore my faith in humanity a little!

If not, if I were you I'd also consider looking for another job as I wouldn't want to spend all my day stuck with a bunch of unsympathetic, narcissistic, jobsworths. You have my sympathy!

Another female co-worker came into the room. She repeated what my supervisor had said,

Hi,

Sounds like the "ringleader" of the complaint has been identified...?

I'm lucky where I am working at the moment. I can deftly do my stuff behind a "customer enquiry" desk in a big posh office shed in a large garden centre! The lads are cool.. & one can see the punters coming a mile off.
Though I have done my "stuff" in the inter-department staff room. I gauge my company if the large table is surrounded by mainly women. (Due to the pulling up of my shirt to inject?) I go behind the lockers. Or out in "the nature" if a nice day.. But to be fair. They all tend to be looking at their smartphones these days.. Lol
On the whole.? Guys are cooler about this sort of thing...

A number of years ago I was called into an office of a large food chain I worked at. HR "didn't know how to handle this". A complaint by an assistant manager accused me of carrying a "spy pen". "Why do you feel the need to use such a device?" They asked.. "I don't" I replied after working out what the fuss was about. "But I have been advised to use this stuff" pulling out my Novopen, removing the cover & displaying the insulin content.
Managment & HR apologetically backed off & the little minx that made the complaint, wasting all out time, lost all credibility..
In fact, she got busted down to "desk jockey" after an big investigation regarding other colleagues complaints against her.

So, I didn't take it personal..! Lol ;)

which is a positive thing for any employer!

Discrimination, harassment and bullying, complain about every person who commented on you being rude or sensitive, and keep testing when you need to.

sorry it happened to you. I once had something similar happen. when it does makes you feel awfull, strange thing is if everybody had it no one would say anything. I reckon it is disscrimination, though I have to admit I try to do it disscreetly. I feel for your pain, it upsets me thinking what we have to do and put up with.

@MissCuppa - sorry to hear this happened to you. I can't say I've had anyone complain about me testing my BGL or injecting insulin at work. I do so at my workstation which happens to be next to a wall. There was one time I was seated in a walk way and someone being nosey by stopping and leaning over me and then asked me why I was putting blood into my phone (I use dario).... I was annoyed at that comment and said "do you mind, it's none of your business but I do need to check my sugar". They suddenly said oh sorry and walked off... they didn't complain to my knowledge. But seriously it is so **** rude what people say to anyone with chronic illness. I keep getting asked when am I going to go back on the phones to speak to customers. The people asking know **** well I can't talk properly... idiots. I get watched, etc.. Even though supposedly there's no discrimination... there certainly is and it is often done underhandedly. But in your case I would be speaking to the manager as you had to test to eat anyhow. It's rude for them to complain. So do they expect you to eat away from the others? Where I work they allow me to eat at my workstation and the only reason for that is that they know I need my seat (it's OH&S) and I am trying to avoid other staff anyhow. I hope you're able to get it sorted to your satisfaction. Don't let them make you feel bad... it's so inappropriate for them to do that.

The higher being has a way of teaching lessons to everyone. I used to be confused and judgemental at my mom blowing up every now and then. Then I got T1, and I found out how sugar affects my fight and flight mood. So don't you worry about it. They will find out one day what it means to be you.

Hi. Is there any reason why you use your arm and not the more usual finger? Using a finger would be less visible as it can be done in your lap?

I took my daughter to McDonald's today. Someone nearby commented about us "spreading germs" as we both sat testing our BG levels. I might have told them to turn around, shut up and eat their burger!! Stupid people everywhere...

You should've done, I would have told them none of their **** business. There's way more hygiene issues with guys walking out of the WC's without washing there hands in McDonalds.
