HI All,

Some advice please?

I was diagnosed Type 1 about 4 months ago - I had the usual symptoms, thirst and keytones etc. I'm 40 and I am in reasonably good physical health being quite active and a gym goer.

But since, I have been injecting the insulin slow and quick acting... Now my glucose levels seem to stay the same, I have changed my dosages and it is constantly getting lower. But no matter what I do, my glucose readings are always low during the day (sub 5) and don't seem to change regardless of the amount of insulin I take.

I have been told the key indicator of Type 1 (among other things) is the presence of Antibodies within the blood, my test for this came back inconclusive which is odd.

I think I am possibly type 2 or no type at all - although I am quite slim in build and always have been. My uncle has Type 2 and is similar build and is the healthy outdoors type.

The hospital seem convinced, but I don't agree, because non of this makes sense to me personally.

Has anyone else been told they were Type 1, then found out later they weren't?

Thanks,

Hi, you may be in what's known as "the honeymoon phase" or "honeymoon period". Google them as there's lots of info but basically, it's fairly common once newly diagnosed to go through a period of very little or no insulin. I was the same as you and thought the docs had made a mistake as I could pretty much eat or drink anything but the novelty soon wears off. Enjoy it while you can :-)

Hi. Yes you could be in the honeymoon phase. Not all Late onset T1s have GAD antibodies. My GAD test was negative but the c-peptide showed no insulin production. There are many causes of islet cell failure besides GAD such as pancreattis, viruses, other antibodies and so on. Having the insulin as long as you test won't do any harm and in the longer-term things will become clearer. I had always been thin and lost more weight around diagnosis; classic signs of LADA
