Type 1'stars R Us

It is very irritating. I had a chiro 4 years ago tell me I could be cured by some herbs and my sugars could be normalized as I didn't get my diabetes as a kid. No amount of explaining was changing her mind. That any medical personal is still running around that uneducated is scary. And very maddening when you run across it.

I had that from the GPs/practice nurses when I was first diagnosed. Awful to know the wrong information is still being broadcast. My clinic staff also did some sorting out....

Not been well since Christmas with stomach problems. Anyone here had helicobacter pylori ? Just had a test for this this morning. In another news had lots of blood tests including HbA1c and got a 45 result. So happy with that.

Hi all, late to this rant, @karen8967 how did you not smack him? It's beyond belief that people want to argue with us about a condition we manage every day. Hope today was better! @Antje77 your comment made me spit my tea

Sorry you've not been well, and hope you soon feel better. Great HbA1c result well done.

Morning all, black rain so I'm not going out
I went to collect my repeat prescription last week and they were a box of needles short. I went back yesterday and the pharmacist said he was having difficulties getting hold of them. I feel a slight worry coming on.

My last prescription was also a box of needles short Sue,and the one box I got wasn't the usual brand. I queried it and ended up phoning the surgery who explained it was due to a supply issue and they'd only given me one box in the hope the other brand came in. I don't care what brand they are as long as they work, so I just got a second box of the new ones. I was told there was a manufacturing problem with the others, so I'd like to think theres nothing sinister. Mind you, with the EU's vaccine antics, who's to say right now!

And that's another week in this weird world of educating done...

So, time to own up to yesterday's moment of forgetfulness. I've taken to finishing the working day by going off for my once a day walk, then eating when I've had my bath after the walk.

But, because every week has had a different routine and this week has seen a ridiculous amount of this, (thank you snow day which wasn't) I had a brain meltdown,. I carefully calculated my bolus, as my tea was cooking, entered it in MySugr, had a moment of distraction and then promptly forgot to take the blessed insulin.

The bedtime check was OK, a bit higher than usual, but as I'd eaten a bit later I wasn't too bothered. But, when I did what has become a regular-ish 2.00 a.m. check, an 18.0 did not impress me one iota and it was only when I got the Echo pen out to do the correction, I realised I'd had no fast-acting since lunchtime.

Oops... all back on an even keel again now.

I had heard there "might" be a syringe shortage as they were focused on syringes for the vaccines. But then they said don't worry about it, it won't happen............................ You know that can just mean sometimes that they don't want a run on supplies half the time. I have not seen any shortages or heard of any here in the states at all though.

In fact I have boxes of 5/8 inch insulin needles I don't know what to do with. I gave some extra supplies to my DE here, but she didn't want the syringes as everyone has switched to pen needles or pumps. There is a small amount of us type 1's on the island. I would expect a lot of type 2's and some use insulin but I guess they are on pens too. But before my pump I would get sent a 3 month supply at a time, plus I always had a 3 month backup so when I switched I had extras. It's easier to reuse pen needles obviously because of the contamination factor but with care can be done.

Hi all- I am not enjoying lockdown 3 - I am finding it really lonesome. I love baking but have been giving most of what I bake away to my neighbours as it sends my blood glucose through the roof. My neighbours are very happy but I would like to see if I can use a sugar alternative and a friend suggested I use xylitol instead of sugar. Has anyone used it or know where to buy it? Does anyone have any advice on sugar substitutes especially for baking or jam making?

@Xal Jam doesn't really need sweeteners, it can taste delicious without.

I really like stevia, however the taste can vary per brand and sometimes you have to get used to it. But at the beginning a half and half mixture cuts back on how much sugar you use. I really like the brand NuNaturals. Sometimes you can write the companies that are available to you and they will send sample packets. Monk Fruit also works.

I love xylitol, but it doesn't love me. A common problem for many. It causes diarrhea and gas easily, but I did like it's flavor and ease of using. Malitol instantly upsets my stomach, that is common too. Erythritol is supposed to be the easiest on the digestive track and not cause issues and there are blends available of stevia and erythritol mixed to give it the more common sugar flavor that some prefer over plain stevia's flavor. I prefer to use stevia or sometimes a mix of stevia and real sugar for flavor. I have a tendency to cut in half or just omit any sugar requirements in recipes. But I don't do a ton of baking.

One thing about sugar alcohols is they can raise BG levels in some. For a "normal" person or a type 2 the idea is you metabolize them so fast they don't raise your Bg levels. But a type 1 doesn't make any insulin so it can be different..............Some type 1's don't notice a spike but I know I was at a lecture by Gary Scheiner and he said you might have to dose something for sugar alcohols.

Stevia, Monk fruit and sugar alcohols are all available online through the herb supply type companies. Health food or natural stores should have a good selection too. But a lot of it is showing up in the regular grocery stores now too.

@Marie2

Thank you for your detailed answer- I had no idea there were so many different sugar alternatives. I will have to try something & see what it tastes like and I guess whether it ‘likes’ me. I certainly have time at the moment to experiment.

Hi, yes it lonely, even though I have been going out for walks ( 4 1/2 hours over the weekend) and knitting at home, love reading too, but it's being on one's own that's hit's home.
For baking you could use, Nutriseed Coconut sugar, Stevia, also you could use Almond flour instead of wheat flour for even lower carbs.
Have a google to get some good ideas and info.
