I think the US guidelines are a little different. I know retiring for me helped improve my numbers, but along the line so did prebolusing, a pump and a CGM.

In the US if you go by numbers they prefer you to be optimally 42-48 (6-6.5), but under 53 (7) has been the rule of thumb. With under 58 (7.5) if you are an elder. And a higher A1C is accepted for kids and for teens.

They used to have a fit if you were under 42 because they thought that meant you were having a lot of lows to get that average. But with the wide use of CGM's here they have learned to look at TIR more to show how you are getting to those numbers. They want you to be 70% TIR between 3.9-10. (70-180). They have figured out you could have a good A1C because of a lot of highs and lows which is not the healthy way to achieve it.

  • Glucose goals can vary for each person, but a typical target glucose range is from 70 to 180 mg/dL. (3.9-10 mmol)
  • For most people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes, a TIR above 70% is recommended. That's about 17 hours of a 24-hour day.
  • You should aim to spend less than 4% (58 minutes) below 70 mg/dL, (3.9mmol) less than 1% (14 minutes) below 54 mg/dL, (3.mmol) less than 25% (6 hours) above 180 mg/dL, (10mmol)
  • and less than 5% (1 hour, 12 minutes) above 250 mg/dL. (13.9mmol)
  • TIR targets can be lower for older or high-risk individuals and for those younger than age 25.
Doctors here really don't like to see more than 2% under 70 (3.9mmol) although if it's all above 54 (3.mmol) they are usually okay with it.

Time-In-Range and Diabetes

Time-in-Range, or TIR, is the amount of time those with diabetes spend with their blood glucose levels in a recommended target range and is represented as a percentage. It is recommended for most people with diabetes to target blood glucose levels between 70 and 180 mg/dL.

A lot of people love the loop systems. It does take some work to get them right. Knowing your right basal rate, IC ratio etc beforehand will make it easier to set up initially. It will really help if you know those before you go on it.

I think whether you like it or not depends on what your aims for BG levels are and what kind of control you already have.
 
Just wanted to say Hi to everyone!

Not much going on here. I've been snorkeling once every week. Last week it was the day between two storms, really bad current and murky water Yuk! This week sort of murky but 28 celsius water temp (82F) and very calm with no current. Dropped BG some today. That's why I wear a Libre so I can keep an eye on it. Chocolate, vanilla, espresso gels all good, but salted caramel in salty ocean water Yuk!!!! We ended up swimming for 3 hours. My Dexcom came loose too, but I managed to snag it when it was still barely held on. I have no idea why it decided to do that as it never has before. I use Skin Tac and and their overpatch. Who knows.

But I hope everyone is doing well!
 
Hi @Marie 2, hi all, it has gone kinda quiet here. I've not been around much, life's just been really busy - in the nicest ways - but a bit less so now.
My biggest news is that the podiatry service here is seeing people more routinely again, which is great as I've had two surgeries on my foot (not diabetes related) which have left me with a problem of hard skin forming all the time, not least because I walk a lot. It's on the sole and outside edge, and I file it as much as poss but I'm not as supple as I used to be, and reaching bits of it safely isn't so easy, plus I can't do as good a job as they can with a scalpel. It's alos started to give me some pain, so I really do need to see someone.
Hope lief's going well for everyone, especially @karen8967, and it'd be great to see more posting on here again
 
Hi everyone. Sounds like post code lottery @hh1 as the podiatry service here carried on as normal right through the pandemic. I just ring them up and can book an appointment usually within 10 days. Brilliant service!! Consider myself very fortunate, and wish it was the same everywhere.

I've hurt my back, so am frustrated at everything piling up that I can't do. It was a bit easier on Sunday, so ventured to load/unload the washing machine, and am back to square one. Agh!! The only time I can get comfortable for a few hours is in bed, but then that gets too painful as well.
 
oh, so sorry to hear about your back. People who've never experienced it often have no idea of how bad it is in terms of how many things it affects - and I do understand the drive to carry on and do things which are perhaps unwise...

Oh, I seem to have lost the thread right before my wonderful holiday to the UK.
I've been camping for 10 days, seeing some of your country and finally meeting my colleagues from the mod team in real life for an amazing meal in Birmingham, after postponing for two and a half years due to covid!
(Yes that's me with my elbow on the table. Guess something went wrong with my upbringing when it comes to table manners.)

BG ran a bit higher than usual, lots of numbers in the 8-11 range which usually only happens very rarely so not a problem.

@hh1 When I was younger I was barefoot all the time, I had super thick calluses, as I aged they started to crack and could be painful so I had started to work at sanding them down. But the calluses were so thick that I could really just alleviate the areas that were cracking........ and then I had foot surgery and I woke up to everything completely trimmed off on both feet. I never even knew they could do that! It was great!

@Hopeful34 Backs can be so painful, you just move wrong and you can be back to square one. And then you feel like you should be able to do the simplest thing and you pay for it after. Heat works really well for mine. I go to bed with a heating pad that auto shuts off after about an hour. (only because I've been told it's not good for me to leave it on all night oe else I would ) If I wake up I can just turn it back on and it helps a lot. I hope you feel better soon.
 
So, let’s give everyone a laugh.
On the 1st September I had a blood test at the hospital. It was a test for problems with cortisol production. All arranged by my consultant. I had heard nothing and asked a couple of times at Gps if they had any results. Tuesday I asked again. Nothing! So rang hospital, results were there but told they were on a shared system with Gp and they should tell me. Back to Gp yesterday, yes they were on this system but it was up to the hospital to tell me not them. Rang DN team this morning it is up to the Gp and she wouldn’t tell me. Bangs head on table and gets a little cross. I told her that Gp said the hospital arranged for them and they were abdicating responsibilities. Grr..! Please will you get my consultant to contact me. They are my results, nobody will tell me them. Ridiculous! Stuck in the middle of politics.
 
@becca59 that's not a funny story - how did you not lose your temper? And how can all that possibly be right? I take it those results won't be on the system where you can access them yourself. No, 'course not, nothing's that easy ! Good luck and keep us posted...

It's called The fish at Wixford and it's mainly a pub (which means camping costs only 10 a night!). I don't understand why they don't advertise their campsite more, it's a perfect place and it even has a shower you can use for free!
The only downside is the noise of the big road just behind the trees but if you set up your tent close to the little river the river mostly drowns out the car noises.

I liked the very small camping (5 spots only) close to the Harwich ferry even better!
Very friendly people, a beautiful piece of land, and lots of different animals.
Perfect if you ever need to take the ferry, I spent my first night there and then the last 3 nights as well because I liked it so much.

And if you're there and you like to go out for a low carb meal, there is Keto Bite UK in Frinton on Sea.
Very enthousiastic staff, very good food, and lots of different low carb cakes too! And 5 minutes from the beach as well.
They don't seem to have a website but they are on Facebook so I'll do some shameless promoting.

I am sorry to hear that @becca59 Very aggravating!

I had something similar happen once years ago. In my case it was a positive on a pap smear and I think they wanted the doctor to call me about it, but it kept going to the nurse who???? Luckily the repeat test was negative, because there was a huge delay in getting the results.

There was sometimes so much aggravation involved in getting results or even copies of the tests sometimes from certain doctors. Some were good but others... not so much. Now all my results from any test or x-ray show up on MyChart. I don't have to ask anyone or wait to see the doctor to see the results. It makes much more sense to me. I can look up what the tests mean and have any questions ready for when I see the doctor. Much better.
