Type 2 and car insurance - uk

Sorry I can't verify for definite but I've seen it asked before and the general advice is yeyes, tell your insurance and it shouldn't make any difference, I think it only gets complicated when/if you suffer from unrecognised hypo's. Hopefully someone else will have a definite tale or advice.

I think I just found the answer after my brief panic. I’m with direct line and this is what they say

If I don’t disclose a medical condition, will it affect my car insurance?
A claim on your car insurance could be invalidated if you have an undisclosed notifiable medical condition or your eyesight doesn’t meet the legal minimum requirement.

Each claim is unique, but if you have a medical condition then check with DVLA – hiding it isn’t worth the risk.

And if you’re due an eyesight test, take a quick trip to the opticians
.

And

You must tell DVLA if you have a driving licence and:

  • You develop a notifiable medical condition or disability
  • You have a condition or disability that’s worsened since you got your licence
Notifiable conditions are anything that could affect your ability to drive safely, including:

  • Epilepsy
  • Strokes
  • Other neurological and mental health conditions
  • Physical disabilities
  • Visual impairments

My son’s insurer (I’m named on it ) says re changes they need to know about are
details if you, or any other person allowed to drive your car, suffers from a condition notifiable to the DVLA and you have not told the DVLA about it, or any condition for which the DVLA have restricted the driving licence. If you are in any doubt whether the condition is notifiable you should ask the DVLA.

So it would seem they only want to know about the same ones as dvla. Think I’ll make a quick call in the morning to be sure

I am also currently with Direct Line and have declared my Type 1 diagnosis to them multiple times - each time they have effectively said 'thank you, but we don't need to know' so long as I satisfy DVLA requirements. I've asked them to put a note in my file, just in case their attitude were to change in the event of needing to make a claim.

At my diabetes education course I was told as a type 2 I needed to tell your car insurers but it shouldn’t affect your premium. I informed my insurer and sure enough no rise to my premium, they just asked what meds I was on.

Car insurance shouldn't discriminate. DVLA will only issue a restricted licence under review if the driver is prescribed possible hypo inducing drugs such as insulin or Glicazide... (As an insulin user, that's my focus.)

The only effect to my premium is the fact I drive a "Jap import." (But that is through my choice of,vehicle to which I get concessions through an owner's club.) ;)
