HI to all
I was diagnosed type 2 in September 2011 my reading then was 16.4 and was put on meds including statins changed diet I am 6ft tall and only 14st, done really well and got my readings down to 5.9 consistently since then, recently had a blood test for lipids and got called back to the doctors and my reading for cholesterol is now 7.4, never had a problem with this, they have now doubled my statins to 40mg a day and need more tests for lipids and kidney and liver function.
I am now starting to feel really depressed about this as I thought that I had done well but it is another kick in the teeth, I now think that what ever I do I cant win, is there anyone who has this problems and symptoms or is this what I have got to look forward to, I am normally a very level solid confident person.
Any good and positive replies would be helpful so that I know what to look forward to ???.

Hi thanks for the response
I have 2 Weetabix for breakfast at about 6.15am the during the day I have 2 ham on brown and 3 fruit generally orange, pear and banana then evening meal which my wife is very good at (she copied my diet and is down to size 10 jeans) no fried food no chocolate have chicken breast, fish, rice and steamed vegetables.
I have a very active job on feet all day lifting and carrying normally do 10/12 hour days don't smoke and I know its wrong but I am now drinking more alcohol as I think what's the point I am fighting a losing battle

Which statin were you put on? Simvastatin may not lower levels at 10mg dose...

I have the same issues, I had high cholesterol first and started simvastatin 10gm about 8 years ago. it has steadily increased over time despite dietary changes and ended up on 40mg simvastatin, but still increasing to over 8. Doctor was reluctant to got to increase to 80mg simvastatin so a short while ago I was switched to 40mg lipitor to see if that makes a difference as she says that some people respond better after a change in statin. Due to get my first lipid test results next week.

The doctor is happy with my diet. I was diagnosed T2 last month havin been pre diabetic for some time, so I'm now on 500mg metformin as well, testing and managing to hit my BG targets pretty much all the time.

I will let you know if the statin change has made a difference

Hi. As you may have gathered there is a lot of debate about the value of statins with some experts saying reducing blood cholesterol in practice has little effect on risk of circulatory problems; you have to make up your own mind on this. Blood sugar is the number one priority for us. It sounds like you blood sugar is under good control. Be aware that bananas particularly when eaten with other fruit can cause sugars to spike so keep an eye on that. I wouldn't worry too much about fat as it doesn't directly affect blood cholesterol; the way the metabolism works is far more complex than that. Keep to Omega-3 oils where you can.

Hi and thanks for all the replies
I have never had a bad diet very very rarely eat junk food never had a sweet tooth my cholesterol has always been good 5ish I work in a reasonably manual job always on the go normally do 12 hour days don't smoke, when diagnosed only on diet controlled but they started me on 20mg simvastatin but that gave me bad muscle aches so they changed it to 20mg primvastatin been on that for over a year but now my cholesterol has now gone over the 7s so they have put that up to 40mg of primvastatin
I am now starting to think that this diabetes gets me no matter what I do so am I just cursed and that's it for me now starting to get depressed by all this, I have always hated taking tablets anyway so shall I just stop them all and see what happens.
I have got an appointment in 2 weeks with my nurse and will discuss this with her then

Good post diabell, I'm 19 years post heart transplant and wouldn't touch a statin or any other chol lowering gimmick if you paid me. I eat lots of sat fat and have a level of 6.2% down from 7.4% 6 months ago, I say that is too low.

Are you aware that statins can actually cause diabetes? I would do more research if I were you, google Dr Briffa see what he has to say about statins.
My diet was good eg. I was veggie, which tends to be higher in carbs like rice, pasta etc. I got diabetes. Now I don't eat pasta rice flour, bread in fact no white stuff.
Good oils from avocados, I cook in butter and eat alot of eggs done anyway.

This is very worrying, I was put straight on to 1000mg Metformin then two weeks later in spite of my cholesterol being the lowest its been in years at 5.8 was whapped straight on to 40mg simvastatin. Starting to think it's best not to read anything anymore.
Don't despair, it sounds like you've been dealing with this really well and there's no reason why you shouldn't cope admirably with this set back. Chin up ;-)

seems the switch from 40mg Simvastatin to 40mg Atorvastatin has made a big difference, Cholesterol was heading north of 8 in December when I was on Simvastatin, results back today after 4 months on Arovastatin has pushed it back down to down to 4.1 without any real change in my diet which was pretty healthy anyway. On that basis a change of medication has worked pretty well for me as the only other option the doctor could offer me was to double the simvastatin which I refused.
