Type 2 Diabetes reversal

I was diagnosed immediately after COVID, and prescribed Metformin. At that time my twin brother, who was also diagnosed a month earlier already taking Metformin twice a day. I researched online and found a way to cut carbs and control diabetes. I was misled by several doctors, but I stayed firm on my diet. My latest HbA1c result showed below 4.9 and my brother's 4.8 without any medication at all.

Is anyone else following strict diet to control diabetes without medication?

That wouldn't work for me. Without medication my food cravings would always win out. But I'm happy it's working for you and your brother.

Well done to you and your twin for gaining control. You’ll find many members here who keep their HbA1c at non diabetic levels through low carb diet alone. Then there are others who like myself eat low carb with a small dose of medication for excellent control. Just remember to keep up doing what you’re doing to stay at non diabetic levels.

Thank you. I don't eat meat, so it becomes really difficult to find things to eat. Vegetables, cheese, yogurt and unsweetened peanut butter is helping me to keep at it.

Especially well done. It is more difficult for those who don't eat meat (and even harder still for vegans)!
Do you eat eggs?
Some people find that they can eat some lentils and certain beans, but for others they are a no-go.

I eat eggs seldom. Lentils and beans are high carb. I used to measure my blood sugar after 1 hour of a meal, then 1.30 hr, and then at 2 hr interval to check if my diet was working. I wish I could eat meat though, it makes food choices a lot easier and safer. I have also given up rice and bread altogether. A lot of research has gone into finally settling at this life style.

Yes, over five years now for me - I aim for ~20g carb/day, never had any meds. You'll find lots of similar accounts in the "Success Stories" section of the forum.

Diet doctor website has a few low carb vegetarian recipes, check it out.

Kudos to you for keeping it up. How do you measure carbs? I find it very hard to calculate. I never know how much to eat and how often. So, I stick with low carb foods thoughout the day. But it's been working well so far.

I don't, really. I don't eat any high carb bulk items - bread, rice, pasta, pastry, potatoes, fruit, that sort of thing, so I don't need to guess the weight I've eaten and from that estimate total carb eaten. Easier just to set the dial for those permanently to zero. Also out, for the same reason, is nearly everything that you could buy ready made.

I mainly eat meat and dairy, and some above ground veg. The veg is where my carb comes from. A day's worth of carbs might be 16g or it might be 26g, somewhere around 20. As long as I stay in ketosis, it doesn't seem to matter. I've found I can now manage pulses and beans reasonably well every so often, so they've come back into meals in the last couple of years.

In truth I haven't found it difficult. The main thing is that at no point since December 2019 have I ever been hungry. And while I do sometimes miss some of the things I used to eat, I don't miss the complement of increasingly nasty diabetic symptoms that I'd been having since 2009.

I suggest setting your own goals, then finding what works for you in getting there, and then sticking at it. Just because we've all had high blood glucose doesn't necessarily mean that we all have the exact same causes. Your house might be full of water, but you'd do different things to fix it depending on whether it's come from a burst pipe under the floorboards or through a hole in the roof.
