Hi, I was diagnosed type 2 last June and since then have been on 4 different medications all of which have given me bad side effects, the 1st Metformin, 2nd Sitagliptin both constant diarrhoea, the 3rd Semaglutide waking up feeling nausea every morning. I am now in my 5th week of Trulicity once a week injection on a Friday - followed by diarrhoea for 2 days, I’m at the end of my tether its really getting me down as I’m restricted on a weekend going anywhere, surely this can’t be how it should be, please can anyone advise.

Hi TLC55, Welcome to the forum :)

Yep had a similar experience with a few meds, got so sick of bad tums but hang in there, there is light at the end of the tunnel. As catinahat said a lot of us are trying the Low Carb diet, me included and I've seen a huge difference in my numbers.

I found that metformin only caused a problem for me when I ate foods containing alot of carbs. It was a great reminder to keep me on the right dietary path.

@TLC55 All the medications made me sick that they tried on me too...............in my case it turned out I was a type 1. Nausea, vomiting, constipation, headaches, leg swelling. So in my case I refused any more drugs and they put me on insulin and I immediately felt better. I was misdiagnosed for many years, To this day I don't know if I reacted so badly because I was a type 1 or I was reacting to the drugs themselves because I have a history of allergies to drugs. But the drugs certainly weren't helping with the fact that I needed insulin. So keep it in mind, just in case.

Hi @TLC55 - it would be a cruel unfeeling medical professional indeed who did not take notice of such debilitating side effects. Of course you should be able to engage in a meaningful thorough discussion with them as to the upsides and the downsides of your particular treatment options, including of course, the ones you are currently enduring.

And one would hope the outcome of that discussion with your medical professional(s) was a treatment regime that suits you better than the current one you are on.

Interesting information for us, reading of your current treatment, is your current numbers - as in fasting blood glucose readings if you know them, and of course - your HBA1c.

Has your medical professional(s) led you to the lowering your carbohydrate route? Signed you up for a self-management course? (Would you want to do one of those? They can be handy for learning how to self-monitor your condition, for instance. This in essence means using a blood glucose meter so you can find out how your own metabolism works, and how you can work it to your health advantage.) You can get that information in here if doing such courses is not your thing. At least, other people with type two will point you to the online information, including on this website, in the forums, and other websites/information of interest.

Medication is supposed to help you not make things worse, so It's worth asking for SR/slow release Metformin which should help matters.

In general if you can eat less carbs you should have less issues with diarrhoea, and as already suggested, a low carb normal/full fat diet is helping many of us control our glucose levels - often without any further need for medication.

If you are really unlucky then eating just 50 gm of carb a day and taking 1 tablet of Metformin can result in dreadful incontinence, and all sorts of internal problems.
I think I did manage to take 2 tablets on 2 days, but not consecutive and they were dreadful days.
I lasted about 5 weeks, then threw out the tablets. After the next test I realised I never needed them which was pretty galling.
