I'm T2 on humulin M3 twice daily, my bgs are a bit up at present due to being on Prednisolone (8 week course) for bowel problems. I also have stage 4 CKD. I went on the LCHF diet at the beginning of January and have lost over a stone so far - I do have quite a lot to lose. What I'm a little worried about is that my bowels were working fine to begin with, but I'm getting constipated now. I don't understand this, as I've never eaten so many vegetables in my life! I eat a lot of brocolli, cauliflower, courgettes, swede, with protein - mostly chicken or oily fish, cheddar cheese, and am eating butter, using olive oil for cooking. I have totally cut out bread, potatoes, rice and pasta. I have an occasional avocado. I have been to see my renal nutrionalist since starting the diet, and she fully approves, and is going to keep me monitored, which is great. Should I add something to help my bowels though please?

Well done on your weight loss so far:)
Are you drinking loads of water? I also find a couple of cups of coffee get things going on the morning.

At the beginning I did occasionally take psyllium husk as it is all natural, it does work it is just fibre, but do check with your health professional.

Thank you Jo, I probably should up my water intake, and I'll ask about psyllium husk.

Well done on your weight loss so far. I’m eight and a half months into low carb eating and I was troubled with constipation from a couple of months in. I have a small amount psyllium husk each day in my low carb coconut ‘porridge’ for breakfast and most days have a dessertspoonful of ground flaxseed mixed into soup or my dinner each day. I also drink more than I ever used to. I’m pleased to report I’m pretty regular now. Keep at it, the weight loss is so easy to achieve eating this way, I’ve lost 5 stone since last May

Well done @francesk
Changing your diet like that is very impressive. I have a lot to lose, about 90 lbs , so the high carb has to go !

@Rachox "I want to be like you ..."
What is low carb coconut porridge?

Low carb coconut ‘porridge’ is delicious, that’s what it is! I’ve been eating it every morning with strawberries and cream since August and never tire of it! The recipe says a pinch of psyllium but I put in a quarter of a teaspoon in and it doesn’t affect the taste. Here’s the recipe:

Just chuck all the ingredients in a non stick saucepan and stir over a low heat til it reaches your desired consistency.

Thank you Rachox and Jemz for your nice comments. Unfortunately coconut and it's products are a food that I really dislike! I have tried them, but hate the taste. What about nuts? I'll try the flaxseed I think.

It’s funny you should say that, I wasn’t keen on coconut pre low carbing, but along with sweet peppers I’ve developed a taste for it!

Do you use coconut cream or ordinary cream?
The only coconut cream I know is very sweet and comes in sachets in a box. Is that okay for low carb?

Prednisone is constipating - paper insert advises. I think it tends to come on after a little while. As you have pre-existing bowel problems, you're well advised to seek advice from your health care professional before self treating.

Yes, my fitness pal app.
I've just entered small sweet baked potato and it has come up with
128 cal, 29.4 carb, 0.2g fat, 2.8g protein.
It's a really useful app and helps you track all your food.

Nuts or peanut butter is a great source of cheaper fibre. I'm guessing no metformin is complimenting your M3?

Have you tried chia seeds? They have lots of fibre and good fats, they also absorb a lot of fluid so swell in the bowel and make things move along nicely. You can use them in puddings, baking, salads and many other ways
https://www.buzzfeed.com/rachelysan...seed-recipes?utm_term=.dr8Ee9W3GL#.mpe7KRkxOZ Ive used both coconut milk, almond milk - no great difference in the final product, you can also use cream. I Replace sugar / honey in recipes with erythritol ot xylitol

No, Ickihun, I'm not on metformin, just insulin.
I love peanut butter - why didn't I think of that!
