Hi and Welcome,
Can you give some idea of what you eat, and we can make some suggestions.
A lot of people on this site follow a Low Carb High Fat diet, and this combined with a bit of exercise should do your Blood Glucose and weight a lot of good.
Look at the LCHF, Low Card, Diet forums and you will get the idea, otherwise ask and someone will help answer your queries
Good Luck

Thanks for reply. I will have a look on there.

Hello and welcome!

What sort of range are your blood sugars in? Have you got a home testing monitor? If not, I suggest you buy one. If you test out your meals you may well be in for a big shock, but it is the only way to learn.

Your meals as listed above are quite heavy in carbohydrates. Some people can manage a slice of wholemeal bread, many can't. I'm one of the lucky ones that can, but only a heavily seeded sort.

A baked potato is one of the worst things for type 2 diabetics. One or two small new potatoes might be OK, but baked ones are really bad because they turn to glucose in your body very quickly. Baked beans also need careful monitoring. I can't have them at all, even the reduced sugar ones spike me too high.

Do you watch your Mullerlights for the total carbs in them? (try reading the nutrition label) Full fat natural yogurts are best with a few berries thrown in.

For diabetics, carbs are sugar as they all turn to glucose once inside the system, so the fewer the better, and some carbs are much worse than others. Potatoes, bread, rice, pasta, pastry and batter are to be avoided or drastically cut down. Any calories lost by cutting down carbs should be replaced with additional good fats such as real butter, real mayo, real yogurts, cream and cheese. Milk is another difficult one because of the amount of lactose in it (lactose is sugar) and fruits can also be difficult.

Do have a good read round the forums. There is a lot of excellent information and advice, and please come back with any questions.

Well done on your weight loss.

Hi. Yes, watch out for added sugar in low-fat 'healthy' yoghurts and I agree baked potatoes are not the best but at least they have fibre. Watch out for sugar in baked beans and buy low-sugar versions. Metformin is a god drug but doesn't help reduce blood sugar by much so diet remains the key; let's hope it works for you. There is always an outside possibility of you being a Late onset T1 (LADA) which a few of us have been thru. If when your weight is in the normal range and your daily carbs are down below something like 150 gm and you still have continued high sugar then consider LADA as a possibility. There are two tests for this that the GP can do and he can add tablets such as Gliclazide to prod the pancreas for a while.
