Guessing you aren't measuring your sugars regularly..?
Start doing that immediately cut carbs to almost zero and monitor.
See if you can get a week or so grace before insulin?

We can offer support, but you are the one who can change things.

Along with stress, if it is fair to say you have eaten in standard way to get a 124; you will need to decide if medication is preferable to lifestyle change.

If the latter is your choice, I would keep it simple Keto for the long run.

You know what your diet has been like over the last few months. Other than changes in diet and exercise, there is also the possibility that you are in fact T1/LADA (slow onset T1) rather than T2. In that case you would need to be on insulin whatever happens (your immune system has killed your insulin producing cells) and are in severe danger of diabetic ketoacidosis and death if you don't inject insulin. Many T1s get initially misdiagnosed as T2. A sudden dramatic increase in hba1c is a red flag for T1.

an hba1c of 124 is an average blood sugar of 18.8, and is very dangerous. Nothing to stop you taking the insulin and reducing it as your levels go down due to keto.

Do you have a blood testing meter? They'll give you one if you go onto insulin. The meter will tell you what your diet is doing to your body and whether it is the carbs you are eating or the insulin you are not producing that is the problem.

Good luck, whatever you decide.

Thanks for advice. Avoided start on insulin. LCHF diet, exercise and metformin regime plus twice daily blood sugar readings.
Will start to get on top of type 2 once again

well done on getting to grips with it and starting strong.

My suggestion would be to test when you start eating and then 2 hours later. That will tell you how well your body is handling the carbs in that meal. Then in future you can adjust your food choices to get the best results.

If you only test twice a day, you are effectively just pinning the tail on the donkey wearing a blindfold.

please keep posting! This forum is a major part of my keeping-on-track. :D

Thanks for the advice. Now on a much firmer footing on diet control. Have not introduced Metformin
as I want to see what changes occur with diet regime. Testing timings given at surgery. started around 10
now around 6-7 am and pre meal. Follow up with diabetic nurse in 4 weeks.

Difficulty motivating exercise increase from where I used to be - but I am 80 for goodness sake ! Am I
expected to start training for the World Zimmer Racing championships in 2021 ???

Exercise is beneficial but far from essential... what you put in your mouth makes a far greater difference.

Well done for taking this by the horns, @MT1940 . I'd also tend to agree with @bulkbiker on this one - when you are medication free, what you eat (and drink) is the primary tool in your kit bag, along with your testing.

For me, exercise is the finesse. By that I mean, I can make a bit of a difference with it, and certainly if I have a physically demanding day (like heavy digging in the garden, or whatever), I can see a slight difference in my blood glucose.

Good luck with it all.

Don't be a stranger. This journey is one with bumps in the road, so it's nice to know there are people around happy to help us negotiate those bumps.

Grateful for the positive advice and support to get me motivated. Pointers to instructional websites very helpful.Just watch out
for me at next years World Zimmer Racing Championships !!!

Thanks for the support. I have done the journey from diabetic to pre diabetes before. Sadly it slowly returned
because I took my eye off the ball on the lchf front. My fault but I am back on the rails once more. I am determined
to achieve goals without the aid of metformin - might have to but only as a last resort.

My OH is 73, and thankfully very fit and well, enabling him to play golf every other day and use the gym in between. One of his playing buddies is also fit and well, still playing about 3 times a week, in his 80s. He had recently been finding the hilly (home) course sapping, so has invested in a sit-on trolley (as opposed to a cart).

After much angst, he settled on the idea that he plays golf for the joy, not the complete, crushing exhaustion is climbing hills, so the trolley is a facilitator to better enjoyment, and renewed appetite for the game. Sometimes medication needs to be viewed in a similar way. A balance, or trade off, if Plan A isn't working so well, for whatever reason.

It's about balance of eating, drinking, moving around and everything else. Sometimes, even for a while, we need a little help, so don't dismiss Metformin out of hand, but maybe view it as a tool available, if the need arises.

Respect to you.

What kind of instructional website are you looking for?
Guides to low carb eating are here (obviously) and www.dietdoctor.com lots of recipes and info for free.
If you prefer easy to read books then maybe Dr Jason Fung's "The Diabetes Code" is pretty good and not too technical.
