Type2 confirmed yesterday

The good news is that you are done with yo-yo dieting. Drop the weight, add it back on with a bit extra. Eating low carb is something you are going to have to continue. Do it right, you will enjoy it and will have no desire to return to the old ways.

LCHF goes against everything we were ever taught. Hence the ignorance of the HPCs.

Personally, I look forward to the time when you are welcoming newbies to the forum and giving advice, based on your own experience. I have THAT much confidence in you :)

Thankyou. I noticed a lady started a thread yesterday and sounded similar to my experience pre and initial diagnosis and i remember well the worry and the lack of information. You really do go through it emotionally but looking at my journey so far it really does get better and a few wobbles along the way are natural. Still early days but yes the dietary knowledge i have learnt means i will never return to high carb and reduced fat/sweeteners and yes alcohol will be minimal.

You can let go of BMI and calories. The main thing now are the carbs. Cut those, up fats (good ones), and moderate protein... That should get your T2, weight and feeling down, under control. And you'll feel like a new man. Mind you, you've followed a diet before all this, which greatly helps when it comes to discipline. Oh, and you can still have a drink, just not carby ones. ;)

https://josekalsbeek.blogspot.com/2019/11/the-nutritional-thingy.html hopefully will help get you started. If you want to know more. Dr. Jason Fung wrote an excellent book, The Diabetes Code, and there's dietdoctor.com with a massive amount of (mostly free) recepies.
Just read this and fabulous advice it was nice knowing I'm on the right track! Thank you for posting x

Just reading this and thank you for what you've posted ! Quick question for you are we not supposed to have sweeteners? Like in tea or coffee?

My pleasure. I know you asked someone else about sweeteners, so I'm butting in a little: It wholly depends. Artificial ones are toxic to gut bacteria, so you want to not over-do it with those (They're also in diet soda's). Sugar alcohols like erythritol, xylitol (which is poisonous to pets), maltitol and sorbitol are sugar alcohols and are all okay, but they can cause bloating and diarrhea, so again, careful. Stevia's natural, but if you don't like the taste... I prefer a stevia/erythritol blend for cooking/baking, like Pure Via Stevia Sweet, but not too enthused about it in coffee or tea. So I've started having coffee and tea without it. Took a week to get used to and now it's just fine. If you want your coffee "sweet", try going for bulletproof coffee (worth a google, and tastes great!).

Also, use your meter when you have something with sweetener. While technically it should get get no response, for some of us smelling or tasting something sweet will get our pancreas going preemptively... And with the insulin not having anything to go for, the liver kicks into gear with a glucose dump to prevent you from going too low. Might not be the case with you, so that's something to test for.

As Jo says in theory they should be fine but it is a case of certain brands can react differently for individuals. After reading here i changed from Tea with skimmed milk and a sweetener (brand called Slimmer) to Coffee with full fat milk and a sweetener. Within 1st day I'd gone to Cream and dropped the sweetener and really found it better.
Similar with cans of pop I'd switched to Zero Coke or the Zero version of Lilt/Fanta etc years ago but drank it regularly. Now it's just a can every now and then when i fancy one.Same with alcohol. Ideally wouldn't have any but feel denying yourself something totally is self defeating eventually? Just test and work out the effects on yourself and make informed choices. The other thing I've done since joined here is first thing in morning i squeeze a half lemon into iced water and find that sets me up for making right choices with food/drink.
You do sound like you have a good foundation for dealing with this,Just be patient and find what works for you and keep us informed on here if you find that helpful? I certainly do. (Aware of the irony of advising patience when i stamping my feet over speed of getting numbers in range :)
:angelic:

Told you so :) here you offering advice, you are a star.

Yes,Spiritedgirls post struck a chord with me
The LCHF way I've actually not struggled with after first week's cravings for savoury pastry and it's now a way of life and I don't even see it as missing anything.
The erratic moods and general worries also settle after first few weeks although the reaction to Metformin was no fun at all.
Things do get better but of course you only get out what you put in.
The day I get my condition under control will be all the more satisfying.

Have a huge bottle with water every day and fresh lemon slices so I'm making sure I have my 2l a day, I'm going to get a machine, your right, I need to test, I need to suck it up and test, that way I can find out what I can and cant have, always have zero sugar drinks apart from my sweetener in my tea, mainly live on water and tea with a black coffee in the morning, so need to just get a little machine now I guess, you can take my french stick but you cant take my cuppa !!!! Lol

Not had side affects off the metformin yet.. but only been on them two days so that's something to look forward too! I'm not missing the pasta. i just want this gone does the doctors claims of I can completely reverse this ring true ??

I am somewhat cautions when it comes to reversing or remission. This is purely a personal point of view. We can definitely control our numbers and bring them down to non-diabetic levels. If however, I go back to my old ways, my numbers would soar.

I've just been reading the newly diagnosed bit about what mmol level should be before and after a meal, I'm pretty much carb free but I'm shocked the doctor gave me no information on any of this so learning lots from everyone here, I'd never go back to my old ways the reason I put the weight on was i lost my dad, my best friend and I ate my feelings I guess, he'd be so cross if he saw me now, he was a paramedic and was always saying about how people must look after themselves, and after the year of hell I had last year with one thing and another, had to have my horse put down after a horrific accident in the field, my house nearly caught fire from the one next door, my daughter was involved in a head on collision just to name a few, I felt enough was enough and I decided to get a grip in january this year and do something about it, I've already lost over two, nearly three stone but too little too late. I just hoped I could treat this as a lesson and put it into remission and have a sensible eating plan in the future maybe including the odd treat in moderation. Fingers crossed, I'm one determined lady x

Life throws stuff at us sometimes which means we can't take care of ourselves properly; there's just too much else going on to be bothered with that as well. And you've been through the wringer. At the same time though, you seem to have quite the spine on you, so yeah.... While remission is a debatable term (It really does come down to being well controlled, not cured), I do believe you'll get there in no time at all. Medication and complication-free. You've made your mind up, obviously, and that is one heck of a first step to take.

You're going to rock this thing.
Hugs,
Jo

Was the 3rd day for me when felt unsettled then 4th day poomageddon. Changed to Sukkarto slow release and found it better but still had issues on every dosage increase.
With luck you will be one of many who don't have problems on Met. If you do don't suffer bravely get surgery rang up and switch product.

Had a pleasant surprise this morning upon testing. Got a 7.2. After few week of 9s that's the lowest I've seen since diagnosis and got my own meter. Of course more to do but just for myself i was getting frustrated with 9s.

Hi all, I was diagnosed type 2 at the end of Jan with an hbA1c of 96. I started on 3x500mg of metformin. I also decided to finally do something about my weight which at 111kg wasn’t great and this after a few years running and it dropping to that level. Diet was next. Lower carb and calorie control ensued. At the first diabetic nurse appt in March I went up to 4x500mg metformin but my weight was 107kg. On 1st June I had my next hbA1c blood check showing 33, my weight down to 93kg and dropping still. My diabetic nurse has stopped metformin altogether for 3 months and then another hbA1c. My target for stage 1 is 90kg, then going towards 80kg. I exercise a lot more now having run my fastest 5km and 10km recently thanks to carrying less cargo. I am monitoring my instant blood sugar levels for any sign of increases over time. My typical fasting overnight reading is showing between 5.4 to 6.9 mmol....

Back to 9.3 this morning? Not gone over 10 after meal though so that's one thing.Been very careful with food and drink today so hoping back to 7s tomorrow. Little frustrated to be seeing 9s again.

Maybe you woke a few times without realising it, had nightmares or whatever.... Maybe there's a cold coming? Anything can kick your liver into gear with a dump. Keep at it, you've made excellent progress. (And if you have a reading which you think is odd or out of character, wash hands, try again. Might have been a rogue strip!)

Don't worry about variations as you meander back towards normal - there are many different places your body has been frantically storing glucose and they will gradually be unlocked if you keep to low carb eating. You might find that you develop erratic sleep patterns, want to go out for walks after dark, or be up at the crack of dawn, or noon - you might find that you change shape - I had my trousers fall down a few times before I realised I'd lost a couple of stones. Once you have been in the single digits after meals for a while, your metabolism will get back into balance - with any luck - but getting there might be a bit strange.
