Under control but still losing weight

I was diagnosed with diabetes at xmas, although it was orginally thought that I was type 1 as I had extremely high blood sugar levels, all the tests came back negative.

Which meant that I was type 2, I was originally but on gliclazide, but I have been taken off this as it was dropping my sugar levels too loo. But what is concerning me is that I am still losing weight, I was 10st 13 at begining of the year and I am now currently 10st 4

A typical day I will eat the following

Breakfast 50g of porridge and a black coffee
Lunch Salad or Soup with some chicken drumsticks
Tea Breaded Fish with some vegetables and some greek yoghurt for pudding.

I will have cups of tea and coffee between meals and snack on various forms of nuts.

I believe this is healthly but not 100% sure if it enough, I have thought about perhaps looking at trying protein shakes to bulk my meals up.

But any thoughts and ideas appreciated.

It depends on what approach you wish to take. I am wondering if you are eating enough calories? Either that or you have a medical problem. You probably should go and see your doc and discuss your weight loss.
What meds are you now on? How tall are you? What do you weigh? How old are you? If you go on the Atkins site under get started you can calculate your correct weight and BMI for your age, gender and height. Please note, I refer you to this site so that you can work out your correct weight only.
Reference life style. You could eat NHS healthy plate and portion control - see www.diabetes org uk
You could try low GI - there is a forum for this on this website.
Alternatively you could try LCHF - this is what I follow. My husband who is not diabetic eats this. Try www.dietdoctor.com. This website is written by a doctor in Sweden who specialises in obesity and diabetes. People who do not need to lose weight also follow this diet. My understanding is that when you have lost what you need to your body self regulates and you maintain. You can also email the doc directly. Good luck!

Hi. From what you say having a bit more to eat might be needed? Keep away from too many carbs and go for fat and protein as well as what you currently have. The fact that Gliclazide caused your sugars to go low indicates that you still have some useful islet cell function, but perhaps it's not as good as it once was: I'm guessing. Note my GAD test was also negative but my c-peptide showed very little insulin. There are various causes of islet cell failure besides GAD antibodies e.g. viruses, pancreatitis etc

How many calories do you reckon you're consuming a day? It doesn't look like a lot to me, although the nuts etc., could help it add up.

Are you still losing weight? If so, at what rate?

I'm in this balancing phase myself, so understand it can be a bit testing.

I am reporting you for the following reasons:
You cannot tell someone to not worry about their sugar problem. You do not know this person's medical history and I seriously doubt whether you are a doctor and therefore should not be advising anyone.
Your first message is a post to sell your product.

Thanks for the reply,

I am 6ft, it looks like my weight seems to have come down by about 3lbs each month for past 3 monthes.

I was on 40mg gliclazide until the end of march but they took me off it. I think to be honest I do need to eat more but its knowing what to be frank.

All the advice seems to be for losing rather than gaining weight

If you are managing your BG on what you currently eat, then up the portion sizes while you work out what else to add to your diet.

Thats true, I can do that.

I do get some spikes now and then up to about 12 after meals but my BG then drops into the normal range.

What about protein shakes?

Never tried them. As little grey cat says, up your portion sizes or eat more fat. I don't know whether you are following portion control, low GI or LCHF?

In all honesty, I am trying to be healthy as I can be. I have cut out things like cereal, sweets and sugary drinks, but other than that I am eating what I have always eaten.

What causes the spikes to 12, and how long after eating do you see these?

From a totally personal standpoint, if you are within a healthy weight range; just not your ideal, in your shoes, I might be inclined to go for a stabilisation first. It strikes me that going for weight gain, then getting to your perceived ideal range, then having to stop the weight gain and find balance might introduce a bit of yo-yo, which I imagine you would like to avoid.

I feel your pain!

I set myself a 3kg buffer zone, down or up, from my reduced weight and I am now within 0.5kg of the lower limit, and feeling a bit too angular, so I'm trying to find this balance too.

Personally, I won't go to protein shakes or the like, but if you feel you could have these to gain, then ditch them, once at your target weight, that would be a valid choice. I believe you need to be careful of carbs in them, although I might just have made that last bit up in my befuddlement.

I am just concerned because I feel uncomfortable at 10st 4, I am only about 7 lbs off being in the unhealthy range.

mate you may need to see a dietitian to sort your diet out, tell them what diet you want, even if they don't agree it's their job to sort it out for you
as others have said, eat a lot more because you have dropped some calories from your diet, go have a big meal of protein and a big table spoon or 2 of fat, butter or olive oil, 100-120 calories per table spoon
if you want to cut carbs, long term 3-4oz of protein, meat chicken or fish per meal. 9-12 oz a day and make up the shortfall with fat
Robert who is T1 has said he doses for 1/2 the protein because of LCHF, perhaps you can message him for advice
I'd also see your Dr and get thyroid etc checked as there are other reasons you could be losing weight.

this is free to join and is an excellent way of tracking your calories, carbs protein and fat for the day, week, month

How about some eggs and bacon etc for breakfast as well as the porridge? Perhaps add some cheese for snacking or lunch. If you like meat then some occasional red meat such as steak, lamb etc. which has both protein and fat

You are in the normal range for your height
Was reading about this man who started at near your weight (10st 7lb) and had a target weight of 8st 12lb set by Prof Roy Taylor and his GP in an effort to reverse his T2.

"I was down to 8st 13lb with my glucose level down to 4.1 mmol/l."
"Two months later, I got myself tested at the surgery to register a healthy, non-diabetic 5.1mmol/l and was elated when my GP told me: ‘Your diabetes has resolved itself.’

I had stuck to the diet for just 11 days, and reduced my blood sugar to a healthy non-diabetic level. It has remained that way for the past year — my latest reading was 4.9mmol/l. I have kept to just under 9st, joined a gym and gone running three times a week.

I suspect delldon may be about six foot tall and the person with the target of 8 stone 12 lbs may have been considerably shorter.

Yes he was 5ft 7 and he went to the lowest weight on the normal range. For a 6ft man that would be around 10stone. But he aslo did this :"reduced my blood sugar to a healthy non-diabetic level. It has remained that way for the past year — my latest reading was 4.9mmol/l."
