My husband was diagnosed T2D in August after a significant weight loss. Why is losing weight with type? Should not it be the opposite?

Hi Natalia,

Welcome to the forum
Unexpected or unintended weight loss can quite often be a symptom of unmanaged diabetes, both type 1 and type 2.

Both my dad skinny T2 & myself very obese T2 had unexplained weight loss before diagnosis- I was a raging T2 with BG in the high 20s low 30s and all the symptoms so I know I was T2 for quite a long time before I was diagnosed. I was initially diagnosed T1

Having said that it’s not unheard of for older adults to be misdiagnosed as T2 when they are actually T1 or LADA - T1 can come on slower in adults, if you are at all worried it may be worth him asking his GP for a C peptide test & a GAD antibody test to rule out T1

I would have that weight loss checked out by the Dr. Just to be sure it’s diabetes related.Sudden and unexplained weight loss should always be checked out.

My brother was diagnosed T2. He kept his blood sugars at a prediabetic level for a number of years with just Metformin. Then he made the decision to lose a bit of weight, he wasn’t over weight but the weight he did have was around his middle. I recall how happy he was when he reached his ideal weight. The trouble was he kept on losing weight. In the end he had lost so much weight he took himself off to the Dr. He thought he had cancer. They tested his blood sugars and they were in the 40’s. So his blood sugars rose from 6.2 to the 40’s. The Dr remarked that he had so much blood glucose in his blood he had syrup in his veins. He was also getting Diabetic Keto acidosis or DKA symptoms. He was re-diagnosed as late onset T1 or LADA and is now on insulin.

Please get that weightloss checked out.

Caveat: I'm not a doctor and have only been T2 diagnosed for less than 3 months, so no expert on that score either. Just my personal experience and thoughts..

I had the same. Dropping weight without really trying to, coupled with peeing lots and often, made me go for blood tests and then my T2 diagnosis with BG up in the 20s.

Piecing things together - and I may be miles off the mark here - the glucose levels in the blood were high because the glucose wasn't getting taken into cells, either as 'fast energy' glycogen or 'slow energy' fat stores. As a result, the body was only/mostly reliant on existing fat stores for energy and I was effectively on a keto diet as far as my body was concerned, while not being on one as far as my mouth was concerned. Excessive peeing because the body is using all the water to try to flush the system means less water take up into the muscles, skin and other cells too so.. you'd be losing 'fat weight' due to ketosis - evidenced by the accompanying high Ketones measurement, 'muscle weight' due to the muscles working less efficiently through glycogen and water depletion, and 'water weight' because I was weeing it all away.

I don't claim that any of that is accurate. Just how I picture it in my head with a bit of thinking it through.

I've continued to lose weight but that's mostly been through diet and exercise, planning fuelling around exercise needs etc. so am looking more 'fit' and less 'skinny' than I was three months ago despite being slimmer still.

Definitely get the weight loss checked out fully though, in order to rule out anything other.

I lost weight, and I'm a T2, so it's not unheard of. Uncommon though, yes. I'm a weirdo. And it merited extra testing to see whether I was a T1. (GAD and C-peptide tests). If you're worried, ask for additional testing. Could still be T2, but just to be on the safe side.
