Unexplained Hypo's

Hi everyone, had enough episode on Monday morning, nothing this morning as I didn't really sleep. Went to see my GP this afternoon, he listened, but didn't have much idea but said he would speak to one of the diabetic people at the surgery and get back to me. He phoned me later and they think it is my medication glimepiride that is causing the sugars to crash, they want me to try gliclazide? I will collect it tomorrow hopefully. I'm not convinced...........

If glimepiride lowers your bloods so will glicizide.
Ask for a referral, for tests.
Something doesn't fit!
The docs don't know!

I'm not convinced either, apparently she said that glimepiride is known for causing sudden crashes. I have been on it over 2 years and only started getting this problem about 6 months ago and when I previously had the problem 6 years ago was on metformin and insulin
 
Glicizide is a good drug to bring down hba1c levels, but it will drop glucose levels down quicker day to day.
It has been on the forum a few times about this effect.
Ask your doctor why and how they arrived at this decision!
You need to see a specialist!

Apparently they are putting me on an equivalently lower dose if that makes sense. Am seeing the diabetic specialist at the hospital for my annual check at the end of this month so will pursue then unless worse happens.
 
I don't really understand why your GP Practice is meedling with your medication when you are under a consultant.

I know my GP has nothing to do with advice when a patient is under a diabetic consultant.

I would have been phoning your consultants secretary and stating your case to get a quicker appointment if possible.

My GP practice is normally really good, they generally treat there own diabetic patients and don't send them to the local hospital, they have a Dr one day a week at the practice who works at the local hospital the rest of the week, they also have a GP Dr who mops up the rest, but I have no faith in him.

I was under this specialist at the practice for about 5 years and could see her whenever necessary, she was also backed up with a specialist diabetic nurse. Due to my own personal circumstances I stopped seeing her and eventually started to see a consultant at the local hospital. I am only allowed to see him once a year and am supposed to have a follow up with a nurse. This hasn't been happening. I have tried to see him before and been told I can't. I do know one of the nurses there who has been very helpful but they are very pushed. My diabetic care was actually much better when I was cared for by my practice. I have a phobia about drs and it takes me a long while to feel comfortable. Sadly this Dr at my practice is due to retire in a few months so I am unsure what to do now.
My GP who I saw today has been treating me for a variety of problems for the last 6 years and I feel comfortable with him, spoke to the diabetic specialist after my visit to as it was her day at the surgery today.
 
You deserve better care than that!
I would demand a referral even if you have to travel.
It's your health, you are allowed to to go outside your area to a endocrinologist of your choice.
I travel 2 hours to see mine and have been told to phone his secretary if necessary.
Hope you follow your own feelings about this. If your not happy, there are alternatives!
