Urinating much more often than I used to

Hi,
I have a problem with going to the toillet (urinating) more often than I used to go. I used to go 3-5 times per day, now I have to go about 10 times. Even during sleeping. I just to sleep the whole night. Now I wake up once or twice per night to go to the toilette.
My friend told me that this could mean possible diabetes?
Is this true?

Thank you for replying.

No one on here is medically qualified to say what the problem may be, your best bet is to go to your doctors and discuss your symptoms.

Yes I am aware of that. But has anyone here had the same symptoms? I don't want to look like a hypochonder and trouble my doctor for every change that happens in my life, if you know what I mean. :) I am concerned though.

I 'second' Noblehead's comment. You are not alone. I am going through a very similar thing. This may sound like a strange suggestion, but if you keep a record of your eating and drinking habits, how you feel, frequency and volume of urine (yes ... I use a discarded coffee mug for a rough guide!), that may help both you and your GP as you will probably be asked such questions. Even a **** GP would be taken aback by the information!! I have a strong suspicion of what my own problem might be (in my case my diabetes is well-controlled, so I'm pretty certain it's not that).

Good luck!

Hi. Frequent urination can be caused by several things including diabetes, enlarged prostate due to old age and so on. Yes, the GP is the best place to go. If you don't want to see the GP yet, then go to a pharmacy and get a spot diabetes blood test done via finger prick. If this shows elevated sugars then you can go to the GP with a bit more information.

Increased urination and increased thirst are classical symptoms of diabetes.

But you really should go see a GP as random BG tests are no good for excluding diabetes.

From my personal experience :

Feel thirsty- need to drink or will feel dehyrated.

Have glass(es) of water - later on, god my bladder feels full.

Go to toilet.

Feel dehydrated and thirsty.

Repeat above from top.

-----------------------------------

Not THAT often now, but was a massive enigma until I was diagnosed.

I went to my GP with this and general personal wellbeing concerns, lack of energy, drive, enthusiasm, etc.

He ran some tests after me moaning about the above for three or four times and ran some tests. Two days later up the hospital in the diabetes centre.

The truth and fact of the matter is we are not qualified to diagnose you. There's only one way to find out and I suggest you do it soon, if you can. GO TO YOUR GP!

I did and if I hadn't I would never know I have type 1 diabetes.

Godspeed and good luck.

If you are, you are and can receive care and help all the way.

If not, then your problem lies elsewhere and they can run diagnostics and identify the source of your quarry and hopefully treat you for it.

It could be ANYTHING. Get it seen to :)

Mart.

Hi Silvia. You don't mention if you also have increased thirst? As already stated we are not medical professionals and are not qualified in any way to diagnose. Whatever it is you should go see your gp. A genuine concern won't be mistaken for hypochondria! Always check out anything that concerns you with your gp. Speaking for myself I end up going to the loo through the night with a uti. It's a possibility, diabetes is a possibility, there are endless possibilities. For the sake of your health and your peace of mind go to your gp. Please let us know how you get on and best of luck to you

Thank you for caring and thank you for your replies. I don't think I am thirsty more often. Well, at least not that I'm aware of. I will monitor my thirst / me going to the toilette for few days from now on and will then decide on what to do. I am generally in good health, so I really don't want to look like a hypochonder. But then again, we shouldn't play with our health...

Maybe this is a good idea for start. Something I can do on my own, and not trouble my doctor. Do you know what are the expected values for blood sugar?

/edit
Nevermind, I found this:
blood sugar levels chart
blood sugar levels
So I should expect something in between 3.6 and 7.4 mmol/l. I will try this test tomorrow when I buy the tester in our pharmacy..

Bought my tester today. I will do the blood sugar test tomorrow in the morning on an empty stomach... Or should I do the test right away?? Thanks.

I suggest you visit your GP before starting to test your blood glucose. However, if you do want to test, I suggest you do a 'fasting' one tomorrow first (considered by some to be the most important). As I said in an earlier blog, although I am male, I have a urine problem (most likely prostate ... too much information!) which I am pretty sure is not related to my diabetes, but my GP will confirm one way or the other soon.

Whatever the result of your first test, I suggest you speak with your GP first. That would be preferable to posting it on a diabetic forum and asking what people think before you've visited your GP. If you ask a diabetic forum about a symptom, you may well get a diabetic's answer, and I wouldn't want you to worry needlessly. A glucose tolerance test at your surgery will give a strong indication as to whether you are diabetic or not.

Hi all. Sorry I haven't replied back sooner. I have done the blood test and I am happy to say that my blood sugar level was in normal zone :) I will pay close attention to my problems from now on time and if other problems will occur I will visit my doctor. It can't hurt. Thank you all for your help so far.
You are a great community!!
Love, Silvia
