Have had no experience of using a pump; also it's never been a suggestion made to me. But using a basal/bolus system using 'go figure' and experience based on blood-tests must surely achieve reasonable results? (HbA1c 49/6.6%)

NICE recommends a minimum of 4 times per day and to get a good level of management, 8-10 times per day.

This usually equates to:

When getting up;
Before each meal to adjust insulin correctly;
Two hours after each meal to observe post prandial glucose levels and determine if I:C ratios are correct
Before bed

Any other times relating to Sport, Driving and life, as necessary...!

Well, I will add mine. I'm husband of T1 "girl" (59 and T1 for 20 years). When I married her 5 years ago and brought her to Australia (I new she is T1, but I liked her, and sadly enough, we both became widower and widow couple years earlier), I got her to all diabetes helpers around. That's when I came across carbo counting lessons, conducted by young girl, in local hospital, in the room looking like a corner store. She was teaching my wife principles of carbo counting, reading labels from empty food boxes and do some maths, and I had to be present to do translations (my second wife came from Poland and has poor grasp of English). That's made me laugh, and I promptly wrote for her program, so she can do it on her laptop, with self-created database of foods she buys or makes. She's been using it for almost 3 years. Then came idea to make phone app. Makes it easier if you eat out. Now she is using her application on the phone, she does it religiously. Thanks to carbo counting her HbA1C dropped from 12.5 to 8.6 within one year.

I forgot to tell everybody that my calculator has build-in 4mth time limit. Each update extends this time for another 4 mths. When I perfect the program, I would like to sell it for couple bucks. So if your calculator stopped working, just update it, you won't loose anything of your data.
Couple weeks ago I had to take my wife to see her specialist doctor at Baker IDE in Melbourne.(300km). As we would have lots of time before seeing him, he suggested to join some lecture being conducted at the institute. We payed $30 and went in. It turned out to be carbo counting session. My wife doesn't really need it, but I thought I will do a bit of promotion of my calculator. During lesson my wife showed the lecturer how quickly she does her carbo counting using my Diabetic Calculator, she was impressed, but failed to show it to the rest of group. Just said that she will talk about it to me after the lecture. But after the lecture was finished, she simply disappeared. Got the impression that she was worrying more about her job than helping diabetics with carbo counting. I was really disappointed. My wife's doctor recommended calculator to few of his patients, but when I told him about that strange attitude of diabetes educator, he just shrug his shoulders.

Phoenix, I have been astonished at what a difference even light exercise makes to my bg levels. I have to dose myself with chocolate just to manage the school run (3 miles on a bike: I wear one child in a carrier and drag the other child behind me on his scooter, so it's pretty intensive exercise). Will definitely check out the links you posted too.

I'm using this website to help figure out my doses etc. Its actually quite an interesting page if anyone is interested! Shows the approximate ratio based on average daily intake of insulin, and also approximate doses for weight classes. I know this varies depending on the person, but as a guideline, it's great!

I recently found an app called Hedia. Calculates all my bolus injections with carb counting from my fitness pal. Takes a bit of time to work out ratios but it’s helped a lot
