VAT

As part of a generally frustrating morning, I've been out to by test strips and lancets.

The first chemist had the test strips (hurray :D ). When I mentioned VAT, I was told I had to pay it. Exit with test strips and red face

The second chemist had lancets (small pack, though). When I mentioned VAT, she said she'd check the procedure. After two other assistants became involved, I was told I needed an exemption card from the doctor to prove I had the condition. When I pointed out that GP not very co-operative, they could only shrug and apologise.

What are the rules?

After that, I'm almost afraid to show my face in there again (fortunately second chemist is about an hour away from home). But it really was incredibly frustrating (just an extra frustration after others this morning, though) - and not very helpful.

Ah well. Sorry for rant. Ebay here I come. But I would like to know what the rules are. If someone can help please.

soaps on telly and people talking about the characters as if they were real.
I thought it is only necessary to sign a declaration that you are VAT exempt on this item. In a shop, I would ask to speak to a manager. I buy direct from Abbott Diabetes Care and have a declaraion lodged with them.
Out of curiosity, what did you pay at the chemists?

People who are touchy.......feign indignation at the slightest thing. Hypocrites, bullies and cowards.
Hana is right. Here is the full form etc.

The rules are that YOU have to fill in a form, a declaration that you are claiming the exemption because you are Diabetic. The Chemist SHOULD know the rules.......SHOULD ? They SHOULD also have the required forms for you to fill in ? That is all that is required - you do not need any exemption card etc.

Any problems you can quote this information from the HMCE instructions to retailers on their website.

We recommend that you obtain a written declaration from each customer claiming entitlement to VAT relief. Such a declaration should contain sufficient information to demonstrate that a customer fulfils all the criteria for eligibility. The declaration should be separate, or clearly distinguishable from, any order form or invoice against which the goods or services are supplied. A customer signing an order should not automatically be signing a declaration of eligibility for VAT relief.

There is a suggested declaration form at Section 10 that may be copied or otherwise reproduced by you or the customer.

HERE IS THE FORM.

Please note there are penalties for making false declarations

If you are in any doubt as to whether you are eligible to receive goods or services zero-rated for VAT you should consult Notice 701/7 VAT reliefs for disabled people or contact our National Advice Service on 0845 010 9000 before signing the declaration.

Thanks both of you.

Hana - Paid £26.06 for 50 Aviva test strips, and £4.48 for 24 Accucheck multiclix lancets. :(

Have ordered some of each of Ebay for much less, but needed them today.

Cugila - will print that off, thanks.

Don't you just wish people knew what they were doing. ThinK I'll just stick to ordering off the internet.
