Ok so I’m Type 2 Diagnosed nearly a year ago. On diagnosis I had a BMI of 44.3, having lost a whole load of weight my BMI today is 30.4. My husband a fitness instructor, muscley guy has a BMI of 26. He has a set of Tanita scales, all bells and whistles, measures everything except your inside leg measurement!
Today I plucked up the courage with his instruction to step on them. All was pretty much as expected, except my visceral fat was only 9, much to my husband’s surprise as his was 10! Healthy is under 12.
I eat a low carb diet, he doesn’t, he eats the low carb dinners I cook but otherwise eats cereals, toast etc... Have I really become the oppostie of a TOFI? Maybe a FOTI? :joyful::hilarious:

Well done - one up to you. :)

I have the Tanita scales. I can boast because I beat both of you - my visceral fat is 6. :)

My husband's is 12. He isn't a happy bunny.

You have a couple of years head start on me! I so wished I’d used them a year ago to see how far I’ve improved.

I don't have any scales like that but as an engineer I am very sceptical about their ability to measure internal fat by resistance especially if they are the type that are only in contact with your feet. Measure yourself again with damp feet to see if the reading changes.

Yes, you are right, and I have lost all my weight. Once you pass that hurdle you will see a big improvement. It is a great shame you didn't measure it earlier. I only got these scales at Christmas so I don't have any earlier readings either. I wish I did.

Does husband pass the waist/height ratio 1:2 demonstrated on tv recently using string? I am not brave enough to try that and I am a fitness instructor too!

I have to admit that I am sceptical too. I need to lose weight but only from my waist. My hips and legs have always been very slim, but my waist is 32 inches, and my diabetic tape measure tells me that I'm a good inch over the borderline. I keep trying to whittle this area down but it's difficult

Waist 33 1/2”, height 5’ 10” so yes he passes! (chest 42”, weight 83kg, body fat 18-19% but he says he’s out of condition just now!)

In the scheme of things at 5' 10", 72 kg and needing a belt for my 30" jeans.... feeling reassured. :)
.... though I could get sand kicked in my face.

I do the inputting for my wifes practice, we are seeing many people in double digits on the Tanita scales. Of note is that so far we are not seeing a correlation between visceral fat and diabetes, mine is 5.5 with body fat <10%. The personal fat threshold I believe is highly relevant. I notice if my weight goes up if, it is not lean muscle it goes to visceral fat.

Maybe you are metabolising fat in a more healthy way. It is a little frustrating not having big data stats on visceral fat for type 2's particularly at diagnosis.

Thanks for that. I’m hoping the figure is somewhere near accurate and as you say my metabolism benefits as a result. I’m taking part in some Type 2 research next month which includes a Dexa scan, they talk you through the results so I’ll be asking what they think of my visceral fat then too.

I'm another one whose scales have hand grasps too. That was one of my main requirements when I was choosing them.

I'm a skinny old girl, with a visceral fat score of 3, and it has been 3 for well over 3 years. My full body fat percantage is at the super-athlete end of the scale, which I'll take, even though I'm not a gym bunny.

I didn't have scales at all for the first 4 months of my diagnosis, as we were sailing for most of it, and although our boat is a fair size, it seemed OTT, at the time. I've never seen a VF of greater than 5, for myself. I had largely trimmed up by 4 months in.

My OH is a slim, fit chap who plays golf 6 days a week. His VF was 7, last he did the full scan I've just been to look at his memory log on the scales). He's not a low carber, in terms of an intentional way of eating, but his preferences aren't actually all that carb heavy.

This thread encouraged me to check mine again. Since Christmas it has remained at 6 apart from one in February that was 7 (I had gained a few pounds due to tablets).
It has now dropped to 5, and I am wondering if that is the reason I have been seeing a lot of lower fasting and before meal numbers in the past 3 weeks. I have never seen so many consecutive 4s before. By the way, I have not lost weight and not gained any more. Off the tablets since March.
