VLC: The 5% club is overrated

Isn't photoshop marvellous these days!
Don't judge other's by your own standards, I can see the purple felt-tip marks on your fingers.

(Actually wiflib, together with Dillinger, handar and libraising, you guys are my inspiration in proving to me that the old LCHF thing is a sustainable lifestyle choice - and also WJ for showing me that low-carb food is about more than meat and eggs).

Congratulations  I couldnt life without eating fruit and a few carbs personally but if you can sustain that brilliant

And sustainability is the key isn't Sid? I realise that keeping it up for the next 40-odd years is the challenge. But at the moment I'm happy with my diet (which does include berries and an occaisional apple, although I've mainly exchanged my fruit fetish for an avacado fetish).

  An A1c in the fours? That's like the 'Holy Grail' of results!! :D Did you get the A1cNOW meter from the states or have they started selling them in the UK?
Anyway,Bl*@dy well done!!

Four is the floor! They are about £20 for 2 tests in the US. You can get them in England but they are very, very expensive. I dived straight off the aeroplane and into Walgreens for some diabetic shopping. I have a ketone blood meter waiting for me at the office!

What is the VLC Ketogenic diet? I have never heard of it. Is it similar to Atkins?
It's less than about 30g of carbs a day. It's what Bernstein recommends and is almost identical to the Atkins induction.

Dillinger said:
Well done! What a result - you are the first diabetic member of the 4% Club I've ever seen in the wild.

Thanks mate! Still a bit nervous of the accuracy of the old A1cNow kits - but every other one I've done has come in a bit higher than my lab tests.

xyzzy said:
Well done mate! You realise I'm taking that as a personal challenge

Don't. I think that at these levels it comes down to how fast you turn over your red-blood cells. According to the HbA1c to average BG convertor my average BG should be 3.6mmol/l for a 4.5%, when in fact it rarely drops below 5mmol/l.

All of my HbA1cs have come in lower than my meter readings would predict, so it could be that I have a rapid turnover of blood cells. It's only really useful for comparing me to me (and you to you). Whichever way you look at it, it's a lot better than 10.2% from 13 months ago!

I hear that a duff battery reduces readings on "A1cnow" meters by 2 points.......
No, seriously well done mate. Pie and chips to celebrate?

It's possible - I've seen them more than 1 point out in the opposite direction.

Couldn't focus on any posts after that!

Great work, Steve!

Yeah, me neither!

Hi Lorri,

I was the same, initially diagnosed as Type 2 in Jul 2010 but didn't fit the typical profile and was subsequently diagnosed as Type 1. I was put on Glicazide to crash my BG but the doctor said to me this medication was only a short term fix to drop the levels. Once they had come down he then moved me to Metformin and when the BG started to rise again he added Sitagliptin to the Metformin. Nearly 2 years in and my pancreas is still (kind of) working enough for me to not be on insulin Can't claim to be a member of the elusive 5% club though and defo not the 4% (unless the cross trainer takes a pounding). Maybe the 6ers?

Hey Gregg, thankyou for your response, I posted it again on "ask a question" cuz I wasn't sure if anyone notice it :) but you did!. So you still aren't sure if you're type 1 or 2? I don't know what other drugs they would offer me I am kinda relying on the hosp to tell me once I get a firm diagnosis.... if there is such a thing? lol.... My BG's can go really low when I exericse so it can be quite difficult to manage as I am not a big eater really but I also quite often feel week in my limps, which I can get confused with feeling tired, if you know what I mean? :? ...don't know if it's the meds or not.... and then find it hard to get the energy to do my classes, which I am NOT gonna give up :!: My levels can range from around 4 to 8 during the day.

Lorri

Defo Type 1, had the antibody test pretty early on which showed that I was in self-destruct mode. So far I seem to be keeping on top of it, although not with perfect control, by taking the Met and Sit and by cutting down on carbs

I have been handled by my local GP without being referred to the hospital, he has been v good. As long as the numbers stay around where they should be I am happy to try any tablet he suggests. How long it will last who knows

If I manage to repeat this number at my (late) yearly review, what's the odds that my Doctor will announce:
"it appears that you were never really diabetic at all, you must have been misdiagnosed"?

They already stole my Metformin, I hope they don't try and steal my HbA1c tests too. (Although, to be fair to him, it doesn't appear that I need the Met anymore).

At this point, all the talk about whether T2 is curable is pretty irrelevant: even if I could go back onto a high-carb diet, I wouldn't.

What can I say that hasn't been said before. Well done Stephen, brilliant result, even if it is a point or three out. I would avoid wiflib, she is a terrible influence. Squirty cream indeed. On the other hand...

Fantastic result Borofergie - and you deserve it! You should go with xyzzy to his GP appointment! Or to see the Health secretary and definitely lobby Baroness Young if Hana hasn't already cornered her!

The sun is certainly shining on forum mebers this week- even if it isn't anywhere else.!

Great stuff- warmest congratulations Pie and chips WITH squirty cream!

Well done Steve!

You really have set another gold standard. Not only Bernstein - Jenny Ruhl recommends an HbA1c between 4.6 and 5.4%, Blood Sugar 101.

More motivation . . . hmm. :D

Stephen, I'm surprised you got that picture past the mods. Does you wife know about this?

Hey Alliebee, welcome back
No more praises for Stephen though please. His head's already bigger than his belly for the first time in years!

I feel really made up for you :D

Feel a bit uncomfortable in that list.
Only diagnosed end of Nov '11, so the 'sustainable' might agree with my views on the matter, but feels too soon to say it's shown by following it for only a few months.

No, it's YOU (and someone called Gary) I look up to

Onwards and downwards !

I thinks she has her suspiscions but it's getting out of hand...

It started out with a can or two of "Regular" at the back of the fridge, but now I'm deliberately giving up cans of "Light" so she won't find my secrets stashes of "Extra Thick" which I have hidden around the house. I think I have a problem. Please help me...

Mate - it's only a problem when some of it "accidentally" comes out of your nose.

...That's when you know it's time to slow down.
