I’m just recovering from a nasty virus (4 weeks with it) and have not been monitoring my blood glucose as much as I should. I am a diet controlled T2 and have around 30g carbs a day.

I’ve been feeling pretty rough and put it all down to the virus, but did a reading this evening and I am horrified to find my blood glucose has gone from 7.5 (a little high but I’d put weight on) to 26.8!! I was only 12.4 on diagnosis so it has suddenly more than doubled....

I need to get this back down as quickly as possible, but do I need to be checked over too?

I feel your pain with the virus side of things, although I’m not type 2 my levels have been really erratic and a lot higher than usual. Resulted in a trip to the hospital.

How many times a day have you been testing? Might be worth getting in touch with a HCP I would if that was my reading better to be cautious I think :)

Hopefully some others will be along to reply soon :)

A Virus will certainly raise your BG, as will Stress, lack of Sleep , various Medications , lack of Exercise etc.

Having said all that, 26.8 is a very high figure. Which form of dietary control are you using for your T2?

Just to clarify are we talking a 7 before dinner and the 26 after? What did you have for dinner?

Hi, I agree with @Kim Possible- you may have had something on your finger- always worth washing your hands and then retesting.

If it comes up near the same amount you need to consider what you ate but some of the amount may well be due to a virus. That said it probably wouldn't hurt to get some medical advice- and maybe if you are feeling up to it a gentle walk. But if you are not feeling well medical advice is probably a good idea.

I was never above 7 before the virus, usually around 4.5 - 5.5. Since the virus I’m now at around 22 fasting. I’m low carb and have dropped them even lower but it isn’t coming down at all...

I am carb controlled diet which has always worked for me until now. My levels are crazy ever since the virus... they are still around 22 even though my carbs are below 20g per day. It is fairly stable at that but obviously way too high

I have tested numerous times since I posted - still around 22 fasting rate and stable (but obviously way too high). I’m low carb (around 30g per day usually) and have cut them even further but no difference. Guess it’s a trip to my diabetic nurse then...

Hope you’re feeling better now. I’ve been feeling pretty bad hence my delay in replying. Feeling better now but still at 22 fasting rate. I test twice a day which is usually enough to monitor things.... I will take your advice and call my diabetic nurse tomorrow
