Water intake and salt

Sorry, me asking yet another question here:

Is there such a thing as too high a water intake please?

and also, does drinking lots of water deplete my salt and potassium levels and, if so, what should I do about it?

As a confirmed tea and coffee drinker, I am now having herbal teas (no milk or sugar) and sugar free robinsons apple and blackurrant, just a little bit in my water.

Not sure of quantity or anything though.
 
Yes, you can have to much of the old H20. I drink around 2-3 liters a day, and very occasionally a bit more. I was advised to take a supplement with added salt, but the supplement made me ill. Perhaps you could try adding salt to your meals, or while you are cooking veg? I don't like salt and it's banned from my kitchen, but there is always table salt available. Potassium can be taken as a supplement.

I drink Robinsons apple and blackcurrant no added sugar squash as well, I can't drink just plain water. That said when out yesterday, I was so hot, I kept buying bottled water, and that was plain, so I guess I can when needs must. :D
 
I was in Waitrose recently...saw a bottle of water with the brand name Skinny Water :***:

I think I have a salt problem. We worked out that we no longer add salt to anything, and there are many foods to which I used to add salt but I no longer eat those foods. As a result I often feel a bit wavy by mid afternoon, so I grab something salty to eat - a few peanuts or a ¼ pepperami.

My Urine Specific Gravity is off the scale. I thought it was dehydration, but it's lack of sodium according to my nurse SinL.

I try to drink 2 litres of water a day, and don't seem to have any problems at that level.

I use very little salt normally, but in this hot weather it pays to be careful. Try licking the sweat off your top lip - if it doesn't taste salty, you need some! I used this as an excuse for a packet of crisps the other day! :oops: You don't need much - just a little on your food should sort things out.

You need to increase your salt intake on a low-carb diet.

You'll get people piling in here screaming salt is bad - but decent, untreated (ie - not WHITE) salt combined with water is exceptionally good for you.

Your brain AND spine are contained in a fluid sack, containing salt water.

When you are ill and go into hosp[ital, what's teh first thing they give you? A saline drip. What's saline?

Salt water. Extremely expensive salt water.

I dont use salt at all. None. I make most of my food from scratch and I neither add it to the fod, or put any in the cooking water if boiling veg.

I tried the 'licking my top lip' and there was no salty taste.

I will add a bit to my food, especially in this hot weather. I thought salt was Evil :twisted: and Must Not Be Consumed by any mortals, not just diabetic ones.

You can have too much water, but it's a LOT to drink. They thought at one time it was that that caused deaths rom Exctasy
There's no reason to give up real tea and coffee. I drink both, plus fruit teas in the hot weather. I use whole milk too. It contains more trace nutrients than skimmed[which tastes like water to me :( ]
If your diet is varied, you shouldn't end up depleting minerals. Sweating is more likely to do that. A multivitamin/mineral should be enough.

When I was informed I could be sodium deficient, I was advised to put half a teaspoon of salt into a liter of water and drink it. :shock: I could no more drink salty water than give a great white a kiss!
 
I can't do that 'licking the top lip' thing......I don't sweat very much at all and I don't think I've ever had sweat on my face.

Agreed! How anyone can drink salty water is beyond me...

Another way to do it is to put 1/2 tsp of salt onto the back of your tongue and wash it down with a glass of water. Then just drink the rest of the litre at your own pace...
