Hi, Been on lchf since last Sept and got down to my target weight bmi c.22.5; hba1c 42 without meds from diagnosed at 50.
Got a big frame and my family reckon I have lost too much weight over last three years ( since T2D) and look unwell due to being scraggy. Can I gain weight by eating more protein without affecting my haba1c.? D.

Do you feel you look scraggy, or is it others who feel this? If your BMI is now 22.5, you are slap bang in the middle of the "healthy weight" band, so you're unlikely to be clinically underweight, even taking into account your frame.

For weight gain, probably your best bet would be additional fats, but in a controlled way. By that I mean, measured amounts of fat, whether it be cheese, cream, butter, or whatever.

When I was struggling to halt weight loss I upped my portion sizes at first, then added sme cheese, then add peanuts. It took a while, but at each stage, particularly when adding cheese, then the nuts, I would "dose" it, by 1oz chunks of cheese, or babybel portions, and for peanuts, I measure them by the shot glass full. That way I knew exactly what I was eating, as I was concerned (read manic!) that I didn't want to gain a shed load of weight quickly, and enter to yo-yo.

Good luck with it all.

Yep...Kristin nailed it...fat is your key:)

Hi andbreathe, thanks for response . I have some health issues due to medication that mean I shall have to modulate my fat intake by changing quantities and kinds of fat, but a slow and steady approach as you suggest is the way forward. My eldest daughter is a GP and thinks lchf too extreme. Family think I have overdone it. Am six foot five and only 85kg. regards D.

My own personal opinion Derek, is that someone with our sort of metabolic problem, not having endocrine fat is always the best way to be.
No matter your size, I believe that the amount of fat that you have does always work against us.
Eat fat to stabilize your weight, but be aware of the body fat!

If that makes sense, mate.

ATB, mate!

I think the problem is often with other people. It's adjusting to the physical change in your looks. Being older is being scraggy, especially if you are still holding onto old clothing that's a bit big. I grew a beard and changed my appearance, now people don't comment because they don't recognise me.

I agree with Sunstreaker - other people seem to think it's ok to make negative comments about someone losing weight (that maybe they wouldn't if you'd put it on).

I think the important thing is how do you feel? If you feel good - great, why change anything! If you're not feeling good then maybe you need to make changes.

Different fats act differently. In my case avocado and mayo are great, saturated fat, dairy fat and even too many nuts aren't so great. Oils can be hard to digest too, especially fish oil. I sometimes even have problems with fatty fish.
I eat avocado with every meal and never a blip. I use mayo based sauces with most meals as well. I mix it with horseradish, mustard or hot sauces.

I started to eat peanuts to arrest my weight loss , soon became addicted to them. They stabilise my weight and stopped it dropping , but are also a factor in recent increase that's requiring some remedial action, trying to shift 3kgs

Hi Lindesfel
Reading all the above it would seem that there is little to add. I too get called skinny by my loved ones, but it is wearing the oversize clothes of a past era that cause it. Buy something new that actually fits your new slimline look. You will be amazed at the change in attitude. You might also feel better. I know I did.;)

Good point, Mike!

Thanks for the suggestion and warning, sunstreaker.

Thanks, Kristin, I shall have to develop a taste for avocado. I have come to realize, like you, I'll have to choose fats more wisely. regards Derek

6ft 5in, here too. I'm down to 95kg now (would be amazed if I could get to 85kg) and just shaved my beard off to find jowls had appeared while I've been losing weight, so I can sympathise. I've got some loose skin around my chest and belly too, but I've taken the decision to fill them out with muscle, so going to the gym and doing resistance training. It IS possible to be too thin, having some fat reserves is actually a normal state to be in - and will help you if you're sick. I wouldn't take your family's word for it though, you should get it checked out by a medical professional.

Boy that's fast. I only run a 10 minute mile, sometimes 9. Keep it up:)!

When I first lost loads of weight, I found I had jowls too when I shaved my beard off. However, the skin tightened up over a couple of months and they disappeared (I'm fifty next month so not a spring chicken either!)

You will get some loose skin if you lose a lot of weight (I'm 5' 11" and have gone from nearly 19 stone to 10 1/2 in under 2 years and from a 44 inch waist to a 29" one) but it will often tighten up on its own over time (I've even got a six pack starting now :))

I also run between 3 and 5km most days which helps tone things up

I had a few negative comments about my weight loss but I think it's just because it's such a dramatic change and I've also had a lot of compliments.

My view is keeping the fat away helps my blood sugar control immensely and I feel incredibly healthy and that's the most important thing :)

Hi @lindisfel A BMI of 22.5 sounds fine to me. Slim, not scraggy. As long as you feel ok and have the energy to walk a mile in 15 minutes at 77 I wouldn't worry about it. I thought I was quite a fast walker but it takes me about 20 minutes to walk a mile, and I'm almost 65. But I'm only 5'7", so at 6'5" you will have longer legs than me!:D
