Weird eye focusing issue

Hello all. Newly diagnosed here.

It's the start of my second week and the insulin is doing a great job and on my third day of metformin. My eyesight was getting blurrier for month before diagnosed. Last week my vision returned to better than it had been in a year, I was shocked! I'd already come to terms with having to wear glasses.

However, the last two days it seems my eyes feel really fatigued, and things up close (20 centimetres or closer) I cannot seem to focus on and I.can feel my eyes strain quite heavily.

When my vision returned to normal my BS was still around 10. Now it's down to 5.4~6.8 and I have this. When I was diagnosed my BS was 32 and took around 5 days to get under 14 consistently.

Is there any side effects from going from uncontrolled BS to controlled BS so quickly? I'm also feeling very tired, even though I'm eating well now. (Do seem to find it hard to eat 2500 calories without chocolate or Coke!)

Cheers

Hi @ChuckingRox, Welcome to the club!! Many of us recall the eye focussing troubles of before and after treatment.
The usual explanation (not professional advice or opinion) is that the lenses of our eyes alter shape depending on the BSL level and our brains help to adapt to that state. Then we are diagnosed and our BSLs alter, the swelling in the lens alters and our brains adapt to the new images over some weeks.
So you appear to have 'stabilised' your BSLs initially from the 32 mmol/l range to the 10 mmol/l range - quite a change. And perhaps your vision adjusted to that level of about 10 mmol/l, then as the BSLs have come back further your eyes and eye lenses have changed further and your brain is going to need a little time to adapt further.
The important things I have heard are:
to not seek a change in any prescription for spectacles until your BSLs and vision have stabilised ? 3 weeks ? longer.
be careful about driving and other activities which require use of your vision and where poor vision/focussing might cause accidents and harm (your doctor is best to advise on this latter point)
Best Wishes and please keep posting about your journey! :):):)

Hi mate.
welcome to club.

I'm just starting on this journey as well, so don't know enough to advise,

But i'd say kitedoc, has it pretty much nailed.

most days i'm ok, but above average fluctuations in my blood sugars has the same effect on me.

as for the tiredness, i believe that's very common.
i suffered that the first month or so to a greater degree then i do now,
i now put that down to the fact i was attempting to control the BS, by cutting down on additional sugars etc.

i was actively interrupting the flow of energy my body WAS used to receiving.
it's took mine a little time to settle down and start getting used to the NEW fuel regime and rations it's been given.
perhaps it's the same with you ?

i still get the tiredness, but it has improved a lot since augusts diagnosis.

take care, fella

Thanks guys. I think it's my initial frustration after getting my eyesight back, for it to get a little worse again. Never mind! Cannot be helped. Hopefully time will.
